how not to get your bike stolen (picked up)

hi,
i was just wondering today, lets say i park my bike somewhere and lock the wheel towars the left, so the only way they can roll it is in circles, that way theyll almost never be able to run away with my bike.

that leaves the thief with 1 option, to pick up the bike, put it on a truck and drive away with it....even locking it to a pole wont help cause they can just break the lock.

a friend of mine bought a brand new gixxer last year and got it stolen (picked up), then bought another new one.....stolen again!! ...sucks i know , then bought a used gixxer a couple of months ago which he still has.

the only way i can think of is to get a little tracking device like a gps and attach it somewhere in the engine where it can't be easily found....with a portable screen so you'll know when its on the move.

anyone know how much that kind of thing would cost?

also, how much would it be?

does anyone have it installed already?

As for the other stuff, no I don't know of a way.

Aside from sticking it in your garage or something. There's been a rash of motorcycle burglaries around here too, though. So if you find a way that works, let us know.

so far i found a couple of systems for like $500, pretty expensive i know but it's worth a $5,000 bike....anyway i have to wait until tomorrow to call them, its almost midnight here.

but if it you actually had it installed on your bike, and somebody jacks it. it would be so cool, you can just call the cops (maybe get lucky & even go with them), to the bike's location, bust in and arrest everyone. .................... suckers

I dunno man. Wouldn't a motion sensor thing near your bike be a bit less expensive? Have it trigger an alarm in your house and then when it goes off just go out with your gun and start shooting the people.

It's legal in Texas (they're on your propery messing with your property, you have the right to defend it) and Louisiana (Same deal, you can shoot people for screwing with your car, not sure about standing outside your house or not though).

Those are the only two states I know about.



Though the GPS thing may be useful for busting them for good. Finding their hideout/chop shop or whatever.

Just make sure it doesn't make a beeping noise or anything like that while working/activated/whatever.

Edit: Oh snap I forgot Florida too. They recently passed a bill that if someone is breaking into your house they can't sue you for shooting them.

Before, if someone broke into your house, and you shot them and seriously wounded them, they could file charges against you. A completely mentally challenged system but now you can maim them or whatever and be within your rights since they're threatening you, your family, and your property.

I saw a thing on TV about anti-theft devices on cars in Africa. The main idea is a row of shotgun barrels underneath the doors. When someone tries to open the car while the device is activated, the shotguns fire on that side. Variations include replacing shot with a short burst of flame thrower. If only those were legal here...

But since that's not an option, park your bike in a safe area. Inside your house if you have to. Bar locks can be broken and even disc locks aren't foolproof so the best bet is a good parking strategy.

Oh yah I forgot about in your house.

A lot of people around here do that. They don't have garages but they don't wanna park it outside in the back or something so they'll wheel it into the kitchen.

As long as it's like a sportbike it should fit. I don't think a lot of cruisers will fit in a normal doorway, but I've seen several sport bikes go in and out with relative ease.

lmao rofl............1st off i dont think that's legal in the cali, and 2nd i relly don't think i'd be able to shoot anyone with a real gun, i dont have one anyways...maybe a paintball/bb gun ....worst case scenario pick up a shoe and start running after em.

also.......the problem isn't when it's at home, when i get home, i just bring it around the house and park it in the back yard.....kind of a small garage so i'm not worried then, but when i go out to public places where i'm gonna be gone for 4-5 hours....i.e work, meeting, school, motel....etc

I wouldn't really worry about those places.

People with a huge trailer, picking up a bike, and putting it inside is fairly conspicous.

Unless you're out there in the wee hours of the morning (when, I would assume, most the robberies occur).

yeah this is something im really worried about, i live in an apartment and dont have a garage or a backyard. so im a little worried abut it getting messed with when its parked outside

My bike lives outside on the road. Currently she dosnt have a steering lock as the bike thieves who made an attempt on her at the last place managed to knock the unit off using a hammer and screwdriver.*

I have a replacement steering lock that I've not gotten around to fitting, its at Dukens I think.

The first thing I went out and bought after that was a dirty great cable lock that had my insurers seal of approval, I think it even brings down my policy rates a little.

I try not to park her anywhere deserted or dodgy. If she is going to be out of my sight I'll put the lock on, if I can I'll lock her to street furniture, if I cant then the lock goes over the top of the seat under through the rear wheel and out the otherside through the frame. This pretty much totally immobilises the rear wheel, means they cannot remove the rear wheel to get the lock off and must use the flip-flopping front end if they want to lift it and wheel it anywhere. For most thieves its too much effort.

Its not foolproof, a professional and determined thief will get past it but a professional thief can bypass every lock on the market. If we are away from the house for the weekend of whatever I'll make arrangements for my bike to be off road.

Unfortunately the comparitively high cost of parts means that there is a thriving 2nd hand market, most bikes especially sportsbikes that are stolen will be stripped down within hours.

There are some GPS tracking systems on the market that mark multiple major componants, there are some really good alarm systems including ones that page you when the bike is being interferred with.

At the end of the day though unless you can watch your bike 24/7 a professional thief that has decided they want your bike will have it.

Sickeningly your friend is probably being knocked over by the same people, it happens here all the time. Someone will have their house etc knocked over, the thieves wait for the insurance to come through and for the victim to buy shiny brand new stuff nd then they will knock it over again.


*The bike was on the road directly outside the house, it was 4 o'clock in the afternoon and I was crashed out in the front room because I worked nights. I didnt hear them smash the steering lock or instruments off but did wake up because I heard my bike being kicked over, something that impresses everyone who has known me for more than 5 minutes. In the time it took me to grab a pair of jeans and go charging out they had kicked her over 3 times. My baby starts second time everytime so I figure she really didnt want to get taken.
