Bike seller talking mumbo jumbo

#1 Unread post by Vit0r »

I set up the date to pick up a used 1985 Yamaha FZ 750 and the guy was telling me about how he has to teach me about doing some stuff on the bike. He said that the thing underneath was hydraulic and the bike doesn't have a piece of the clutch that lets you shift from neutral to first gear. He said that you have to do something at the bottom so that it could work.

If it were a car it'd kinda be like the ignition doesnt work so you have to manually turn it on by popping the hood and doing some electrical magic. Does anyone have any idea wut the heck talkin about? He said the piece was part of the clutch.

I'd tell the seller, "Get it fixed or the deal is off."

The last thing you need to have to deal with is a BASIC part that isn't working. This is setting off all sorts of alarms with me... my guess is that there are more than a few other things that are not working on this bike.

If your state requires the bike to pass an inspection before you can get tags, etc, then YOU will need to fix this problem before you can ride it (at YOUR expense).

Sounds like buying a used computer without a CPU to me.

PS. Why are you getting a 750 supersport for your first bike?
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

I concur with Sev and Lion_Lady. If she cant shift gears the way she was designed to there is some sort of major problem with the clutch. You may find yourself having to replace the entire thing.

If you are handy with a wrench and are buying the bike as a basket case that'd be one thing, but this sounds completely different.

If the seller wont fix the problem, bearing in mind how basic to the bikes operation the clutch/gearbox is, then I suggest you walk away and find another bike.

your not intending to ride this peice of dodo home are you ???

dood, when peeps start telling ya ya gots to do all sorts of magical tricks to get the bike to perform like a bike...then its time to suck it up and go look for another ride that is less likely to kill ya on the way home from purchase.

unless

your intention is to trailer it home, from which you intend to, at your leisure, rebuild and inject love into your new found peice of joy until its lookin good and safe to ride...this kind of actitivty i find highly exciting.

30. PUSH LEVER SEAL KIT- 1- $14.19

I was talking to him more and he told me that was the part. He said that he was lazy to buy it all these years cuz it was hard to find so he just manually did it every year. I told my bro and he was like, Oh thats nuttin, its just a seal. Anyway the dude is like my best friends brother in law. The seller and his wife (my best friend's sister) live in my best friend's basement since its a two family home. I've been going there since I was in junior high school, flashing the neighbors, streaking round the block, having boxing matches with his son, doing back flips off the pool, yadda yadda yadda, so I don't think he'll geese me out of this deal. He even offered to gimme the extra fairings he has for the bike since he's modified, not a surprise since its a 1985.

"your not intending to ride this peice of dodo home are you ???"
Naw man...my cousin is

"PS. Why are you getting a 750 supersport for your first bike?"
Cuz he's selling it to me for $500 bucks and I'm a poor 18 year old who'd have to take out loans to pay for a Ninja 250. Fawk dat I got textbooks to pay for.

$500 for a bike
$400 for training
$800-1000 for gear

untold thousands in maintenance.

This isn't a poor mans sport anymore. I'd strongly suggest waiting at this point.

A guy that is too lazy to change a $15 seal for years is likely too lazy to perform regular maintenance as well.

I'd take a really good look at the rest of the bike. Worn tires, stretched/worn chain, worn sprockets, dirty oil., etc.

Well if you know what it is and your brother is up for helping you fix it thats cool.

I am guessing nothing in the world is going to change your mind about starting on this, so I am going to suggest you get good insurance, very good gear - the complete works, make sure you get an MSF placement and take a lot of care for your first couple of thousand miles.
