Motorcycle crash data

On these pages, you'll find details of statistics for motorcyclist deaths, serious and minor injuries for the year 2003.

Of the 330 people killed on Victoria's roads in 2003, 38 were riders of motorcycles and one was a pillion passenger. This represents 12% of the road toll and yet only 3% of vehicles registered in Victoria are motorcycles, with only 7% of Victorians holding a licence to ride a motorcycle.

In 2003, 39 motorcyclists were killed, and 820 were seriously injured on Victoria's roads.

Of the 39 motorcyclists killed in 2003:

97% were male,
28% were involved in single vehicle crashes and 36% were involved in crashes with another vehicle at an intersection,
54% occurred in rural Victoria,
41% were involved in afternoon crashes between the hours of 12 midday and 6pm, and
38% of deaths occurred on roads sign posted at 100km/h or more.

Age group data

In 2003, there were 39 motorcycle fatalities, while in the year 2002 there were 936 serious injuries and 1,105 minor injuries*.

Recent research by the ATSB shows that between 1991 and 2001, fatalities among riders aged 17 and over decreased by around 6%, while fatalities among riders 40 years and over increased by 77% for the same period.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, motorcyling in Australia has increased in popularity over recent years, particularly in the 40 years and over age group. The number of kilometres travelled by riders 40 years and over has increased by 17% Australia-wide.

Helmet usage data

In 2003, 3% of riders killed, and 3% of riders seriously injured were not wearing a motorcycle helmet. Of those riders killed or seriously injured who were not wearing a helmet:

39% were aged 16 to 20 years, 30% were aged 21 to 25 years, 9% were aged 26 to 29 years, 9% were aged 30 to 39 years,
61% were in metropolitan areas,
100% were male, and
13% were pillion passengers.

so basically, us blokes shouldn't be on the road in victoria?

Some good stats, but it would be good to also list the percentage of male/female riders in the area, and also of helmet wearing riders in the area.
