here we go, getting first bike next summer

#1 Unread post by carpediem »

my parents are moving to pennsylvania next summer. theyre building a house there. i have an option to stay here and live with friends and since im a firefighter id rather not leave the station its like family there. so to convince me to go my parents decided to let me get a motorcycle which ive wanted ever since i was a lil kid (already have the car i want so all they have left is to get me a bike). now i know im probably going to get flamed for this so yes i have no experience riding and i hate starting small so most likely im not getting a weak bike to start off. all im asking for is for some advice on how to prepare for getting the bike. im getting my license and gear first so is there a website to get customized gear from and what are some good courses i should take to learn how to ride.
thanks for your time

EX500 or GS500F would be good. Or you could get a dirt bike for next season, and the following season get a SV/V-Strom 650, Ninja 650.

:welcome:

If you wait until you're a PA resident to get your permit, the MSF Basic and Advanced are free. The cost of the class is covered by the driver permit and license fees. The link to the PA MSP is in my signature.

As for the firefighting, every station is a family. Just have to find a new home for yourself here. I'm a career medic and volunteer firefighter near Erie.

Doesn't sound like it. If he's accepting the motorcycle than he's going cause from what it sounds like that was the bribe to get him to go along.
Have fun on the open /¦\

The MSF BasicRider Course is a good start.

As you'll read over and over again, you can start with a "big" bike and be fine, but your probability of success (i.e., surviving) goes up if you start "small". The EX500 is an oft recommended starting bike for the sporty-type (and I love mine). Unless you need to do zero to too fast in less than 4.9 seconds, I wouldn't consider it weak. It'll go, it just won't do it accidentally.
