lose chain

hello to all
i have a 1998 Marauder 800 and i need to tension my chain
would it be easier to take it to a shop or can i do this at home???

You should be able to do it on your own. Do you have an owner's hand book? If you do it should give instructions. If not, you will have to loosen the axle nut and the lock nuts on the adjustment screws on both sided of the wheel. Than screw each one in a little bit at a time using the marks on the frame as guides to be able to align the wheel properly. When the tension has been pulled out of the chain reverse process. Do not get chain too tight. Can anyone else help us????

--the manual will often tell you how much play there should be in the chain with a measurment--- low (chain hanging low) to high (chain lifted up) (done on the upper side of the chain).
HERE ARE SOME different posts from elsewhere on the subject:
"Regardless of what the book says....or what kind of a bike it is....there is only one way to correctly adjust chain play.
You sit on the bike and reach down to test the free play. While sitting on it...you should have a minimum of a half inch free play.....and no more than an inch. IE....three quarters of an inch is about perfect. When you do this...the chain should be cold. If hot after a good ride...it stretches a bit."
"My chain calls for 1 3/4". As for the lube, I spray mine down with some good ole wd40 and wipe it down with a rag."
"You should only have about an inch and a 1/2 play in your chain. If it is resting on the swing arm that is bad. here's a good reference for what your doing."

---take your pick--measure what it is now- maybe just right- or if not- you know what's too much-- go talk (or call) a parts place and ask if they carry chain for your bike- then ask how much play it's set for- and can you do it yourself-- usually they'll tell you- just to get you to come in and buy some parts! , places will often just give you the info just to get your parts business!
