OK- I spent 8 days in the woods, starting last Wednesday. We had snow every night until Sunday night when it warmed up, which stunk because Monday was actually opening day of Deer season.

I spent alot of time with my family and friends and had a wonderful time. The hunting was good. 5 of us killed 7 deer, and we managed to get some rabbit and grouse hunting in before deer season started.

I took a 7 point buck and a big doe. My freezer is starting to fill up. The buck's rack was pretty weak, so no trophy.

But thats not why I hunt now, is it.

For some reason a dead deer always makes me feel a little sad. Must be the fact I watched Bambi a lot as a kid. But that is pretty cool, hope you had fun.

What this Province needs is more dead deer. They are reaching vermin-esque numbers here and seem to delight in running out in the hiway, sacrificing themselves just to boost insurance rates and feed the coyotes with their carcasses. Ever since 'gun control', many locals can't be bothered to conform to the Fish-n-Game Nazis and the American hunters can't be bothered trying to satisfy the laws.

Next year come to Alberta and help cull the herd before Wasting Disease forces a mass kill.... again.

I'd offer to go hunting with you BuzZz but the idea of spending time with both you and a gun simultaneously makes my kidneys hurt.

A little smoke and a lot of ammo make for a good time.
But then again, alot of smoke and a little ammo work pretty good too.

looks like you hit the sucker in the underbelly, did you have a kill shot of did it bleed out? What kinda rifle and ammo where ya using?

Both were one shot kills behind the shoulder, (heart/lung shots.)

The bellies are bloody because they have been field dressed.

This particular hunt I was hunting with a World War 2 era 8mm mauser that has been refitted with a sporterized stock. Its extremely acurate which is important because I hunt with open sights. A little large for whitetail but the hole is actually smaller than the one left by a 12 gauge slug. Which is what I have to hunt with here at home in Delaware.

refitted K98? Thats a pretty rare hunting rifle. At least im not the only person that hunts with open sights.

I used to take a win 94 canadian centennial with me for deer and antelope. A 30-30 and it was accurate out to 400+ yards thanks to the bull barrel (also a bear to lug around at 10lbs for a 20" barrel carbine). Just too bad I had to sell it a few years back to pay for college books.

I've got a 30-30 marlin I like for a brush gun, but the 8mm shoots flatter and gives me the ability to reach out and touch them over some pretty good distances.
