insurance in LA
Hi all,
ok, let's talk boring stuff. I've got a few insurance quotes from progressive, and I'm wondering if you can recommend with what to get. First of all, the liability insurance coverage ranges from 15k to 500k. In addition to that you have uninsured/underinsured driver coverage (which means that you are basically paying twice). In Ontario this is unheard of. The minimum liability for a vehicle insurance is $1 milion. Which coverage do you guys have?
Then there is comprehensive coverage which includes theft and vandalism (though no mention of earthquake damage). Is it worth the extra $200? What's the bike theft situation in LA?
thanks a lot,
Eugene

Hey Ninja79 how are ya? I'm in O.C. and fortunately for me my wife works for State Farm so that's who I'm insured through. Never need to get quotes or compare rates I just said "Insure it" and that's that! Anyways, there are lot's of factors we don't know yet such as your age, marital status, driving record, have you taken the msf, what you're riding, will it be a multi vehicle policy, things like that. All these items will have an impact on your premium. Level of coverage and deductable and things like that will depend on your threshold of pain as to how much $$$$ you are willing to part with. I'm sure glad i don't really have to deal with that stuff.

Try telling her it's a loan at illegal rates of interest.
If you figure it out an accident that would cost you $2000 in the long run would cost you $8000 if you claimed it. Through hikes in monthly payments. Which means they front you 2grand and then charge you an extra 6.
The mob isn't that bad.
On second thought, don't tell her that.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

awesome!
awesome! Thanks for the good laugh guys. I basically feel the same way. Last year I had a minor fender bender (my van and another car). It was cheaper -- for both of us -- to settle it without involving the insurance. Otherwise our rates would surely jump and the damage was less than the deductible anyway.
But back to the topic at hand, how much of the liability insurance do you have? And is it worth it to pay the extra $200 for theft/vandalism insurance?
thanks,
Eugene

Mmmmkay, in Alberta I spent $600 for 1/2 million liability (that was $150) and the other $450 as fire/theft/hail. Now I don't really expect my bike to get hailed on, fire isn't a huge concern, and theft doesn't seem especially likely. However, it's a brand new bike, and it looks like the sort of thing that might get stolen, so it was worth it to me.
Comprehensive was $1600, that's $1000 to cover vandalism and anything that I might do to it myself. So what it came down to for me, was it was not worth it. Anything a vandal might do can be paid off in 2 years of insurance, or less. New tank for example would only cost me a couple hundred.
And if I dump it, it would either be cheaper to fix it myself or write it off.
You need to ask yourself (based on the model and year of bike) if it is worth it. No one can answer that for you. But if comprehensive was only another $200, then I'd go for it on my bike.

Pressive for me, its dirt cheap and they showed me the qutoes from the other companies, state farm was a little cheaper but i liked some of the options progressive. So just shop around and find the cheapest, ill tell ya right now, gieco will not be the cheapest for bike insurance. Good Luck

Re: awesome!
I have $250K liability on the bike. It used to be lower until I found out how cheap the higher liability limits were. Going from $50K to $250K was only a few more dollars per year.ninja79 wrote:But back to the topic at hand, how much of the liability insurance do you have? I don't carry comprehensive and collision (liability only), although I do have un/underinsured motorist. I figure I can cover the cost of the bike if it's my fault. The only downside to this is that the un/underinsured motorist will not cover any damage to my bike by an un/underinsured bonehead cager. Only damage to people. Just about every policy I've had on my bikes has been like that. I think it sucks, given that the un/underinsured motorist carries a higher premium than my liability coverage.
For many years I automatically assumed my bike would be covered by un/underinsured motorist coverage, but I found out differently when I started reading the fine print. Still, I haven't opted for the Comprehensive and Collision, since I keep the bike garaged at home, locked up in parking lots, and it's not really worth a huge amount of money anyway.
