I'm buying a bike tomorrow but won't be able to ride it until mid February. It will be winterized until then. Do I need to worry about insurance now or just wait until I begin riding? If the bike is parked in my house would it be covered by my homeowners policy in case of theft?

I would get insurance right away, at least theft insurance. You will have to register the bike in order to put any kind of insurance on it, but that is a minor cost and you won't have to worry about it when the nice weather hits.
As to whether or not it is covered by you homeowners insurance while it is parked in your house, I would say probably not, but you should probably check with your insurance agent to be sure.

Typically insurance runs for the whole year, so it doesn't really matter when you get it done as long as you're keeping it for more then one year.
However, you might be able to have them have certain parts of the policy go into effect on specified later date. Though that'll split up when yuo need to renew...
Talk to your insurance agent.

I don't know where you are, but here in Canukville, any vehicle parked inside a garage or in a house is not covered by the vehicles insurance for theft or fire. It comes under the house insurance.
I have know a couple of guys who ran into this problem when their bikes were stolen or vandalized over the winter. They didn't have proper house coverage even though the bikes were fully insured. They both eventually reached agreements, but it was a big fight the whole way(and over a year) for them. And if you have the house with one company and the bike with another, then you get 2 insurance companies trying to weasel out of liability. And that leaves you holding the bag, and them probably jacking your rates just cause they are heartless, soulless minions of The Dark Powers.

The best thing to do is get insurance and the type I would suggest is storage insurance this way you are still covered in case of some mishap but are not charged the higher rate for a bike that you are not riding.
