Im looking at a virago 750, any tips on what to look for?

Just want to know what I should look at to make sure I' getting a solid bike. I'm not stupid with things mechanical, just need to know if this bike has any faults I should be looking for. One thing I do know is the startter needs replacing, It skips on some starts. Is this a costly repair?

Thanks

does it idle high,"if it has an rpm gauge, it should idle at around 800 to 1000 rpm. does it run rich,"do you smell gas/exaust? Does it backfire or pop?". Does it idle without choke? It should. All these probs are with the carbs, and there the only probs that I had with my 1100 virago when I bought it, other than burning the cr@p outa my legs!!!
