O.k. so the xj 650 runs now,but not great......

I'm not getting enough fire.The plugs are also getting fried by too much gas and not enough fire to burn it.
Also #2 is NOT firing AT ALL.
So what's up?

I would check the plug wire end caps. There is a resistor there that can go bad and leave you with what looks like a bad coil. Are you getting a nice fat blue spark on the engine when you hold a plug wire against the case? Other possiblies include Points(if your bike has them), Wiring between the points and the coil primary. The coils themselves...Check with caps off if you get an open reading with the caps on...caps go bad more often than coils. Also the carbs could be so far out of synch to cause the flooding in a couple of cylinders but not others. Remember...Air, spark, fuel. Need all three at the right time as much as in the right amounts. Good luck.

No,the spark is dim orange.
It's got to be the ignitor or one of the other parts that deliver the spark.

Like Ron said, check the leads and wires first. They tend to be the weakest links in the ignition chain and are cheapest to replace. Then start looking at more costly items like pick-up, ignitors and coils. And it never hurts to have nice, new, clean wiring .
I am sure there must be a set value across the leads for Ohms, but I don't have a manual to hand.....

- BP7ES , gap, .7-.8mm
Spark plug Cap Resistance
- Cyl 1/4 5k ohm
- Cyl 2/3 10k ohm
No set value for resistance on the leads themselves, but at least make sure that all 4 have similar readings.

That's interesting that 1/4 use lower value resistor ends. Is that because of the material the wires are made of? Just curious. They must have pretty good resistance to make that much difference over just a few extra inches. My old kz has solid wire plug wires and uses 5k caps on all four. Electrical issues can be a real hassle...just follow Buzz advice on the method, and you'll be fine...eventually. That orange spark points you in the right direction.

The leads are probably different lengths, so therfore the different ratings.
I only mention it cause today ends with a Y, but....
Wiring SUCKS!!!
Oh,.... and I hate electricity......
