Well, I went to the DMV today to get my learner's permit, but I couldn't get it because my birth certificate was a copy. Why the hell should this matter? I had about 10 other points of identification but it has to be an original

. I wasted so much time, and now I have to go there again tomorrow. I even had a valid driver's license, so I obviously had it before. Just a rant I had to get off before I explode.

They need ID, because there are some bad people who try to get fake Identification made up for everything from avoiding the police to getting into the bar under age.
In Canada ALL licenses are issued from a central authority, and mailed out. Which is freaking mentally challenged! It's remarkably easy to steal mail, and those licenses can take up to 4 weeks to arrive. Meaning that someone could be running around with my license for easily 3 weeks before I realize that it's be taken out of my mailbox.

I know they need ID, but I had so much with me that there was no way I couldn't be me. I had two photo IDs, and a lot of other stuff. They just wanted to be a pain. Seriously, is it possible to get fired from the DMV, lol? It is just annoying how the government gets so technical over stupid stuff and let big things go by unnoticed.

Those rules are in place for a reason...I have to disagree with you here. I went through the same thing. The government employees at the DMV are not exactly 'equipped' to make serious judgements about individual cases, so they follow the rules to the letter. Plus they don't care...if you don't get good service, where else are you going to go?

Personally, I don't see what a birth certificate proves in the first place. They are by far the easiest documents to forge and if you present identification that required a birth certificate to obtain you should be good to go. The DMV is notorious for being unreasonable, uncaring, and unsympothetic, and this instance is no exception. We have the technology in place to do away with the DMV all together and it's about time we use it.

I dont know about doing away with the DMV...but I do think they need to be doing more than what they are, such as keeping people who cannot drive safely off the roads.

The rules may be in place for a reason, but that doesn't mean they're not stupid. Seriously, Chris has a valid driver's license issued by the DMV (presumably based on their having verified his identity). All he wants to do is add a learners permit. If they can't tell if his DMV issued license is fake, how are they going to authenticate a birth certificate? Keep in mind that birth certs could be from any state ( or country for that matter). The DMV's requirement is a futile bureaucratic exercise that provides no added value (unless you consider making people angry valuable). If I were Chris, I'd be ticked off as well.

I don't think the DMV should be destroyed, but they act like they don't have a brain of their own. I had a driver's license, college id, bank statement, social security card, and a debit card, but they could not accept a copy of my birth certificate because only an original proves I'm here legally

. I got the original and went back today and got it done, but they cause so much unneeded hassel.

your mistake was in going in there and letting them know you are a genuine american citizen.you should have went with absolutely nothing and repeated over and over "no english no english" you would have been escorted to a supervisors office and shortly left with your permit.that is the way it works here.
