So, my buddies know I'm in the search for a nice starter bike...preferably an EX500 or GS500...but none of them ride. But I have a friend of a friend who rides and we're talking and he says to me:

"Naw man, don't get a small bike...just get a bigger one and get used to it...If you get a small bike, once you get used to it in, like 3 weeks, you're going to want MORE POWER"

BWAHAHAHAHA....so I decided to get a Gixxxer...now all I need is a lawyer who'll draw up my WILL and you guys can hold a raffle to see who gets my life insurance...it'll be like LOTTO lol

Seriously tho, with friends like these....

I'll post pix of the 500 when I get it

I understand what your saying. It is even worse when you talk to people who know nothing about motorcycles. One person said I should get one of the liter sport bikes. I told him no way, and I would kill myself. he says, how just don't pull on the throttle too much.

This bigger bigger, more power more power thing is why so many people drop their bikes.

That's how you feel until you ride something that will accelerate faster than you ever imagined. You may not need it but it sure is an awesome feeling to have it there.

For the supersports and race replicas, it's more than just balls to the wall straight up power. There's also the touchy brakes capable of a one finger endo to worry about, or the handle bars you breath on and you're sliding a knee. On a bike like the EX/GS500 those things aren't as severe. You CAN panic and mash the brakes too hard and still be able to recover the bike, but on a "true" sportbike, it could be disasterous. Not to say that the braking and touchy bars is a BAD thing, cause that gixxer will stop better and handle better than any 500 could ever dream of.
Good choice on the 500. Learn to ride the "pee" outa it, THEN upgrade to a 600 and show that "omg powwweerrrrr" guy how to REALLY ride a sport bike.

I have owned bikes that have blurred my vision as I accelerated trying to keep the front wheel on the deck beyond the first four gear changes.
I know fast bikes, but I also know how good it feels to blast past a bike with 80 more HP than my bike in a set of bends because the bloke on it can't ride it any faster round a corner than a trained monkey.

Anyone can twist a throttle, so the thrill is short lived.

Never, EVER buy a bike that intimidates you. EVER.
