Is the Helmet the same as a Seatbelt?

In the U.S. it is mandatory for drivers to wear seatbelts. I believe the seatbelt issue was heavily reisisted at first, and then became accepted practice.
Is the helmet issue similar to the seatbelt issue? Should we have a law dictating our safety? The government already has preset rules for our saftey in all modes of transportation. Why are motorcycles considerd different?
I have no opinon on the matter, but do find the conundrum here confusing. I'm curious what everyone else thinks about it.

To this day I still don't wear a seatbelt so "accepted practice" isn't a term i'd use. I do however wear a helmet anytime i'm on my bike. Go figure.

My 2 cents here....I always were a seatbelt, even before it was manditory, never wear a helmet.

I have always worn a seatbelt and feel naked without it. As for a helmet, I've always worn one. Road rash I can take, but my head being opened like a melon....... Hell No!!!!

Most dead cage accident victims didn't wear belts, just like most dead bike accident victims didn't wear helmets. Pretty simple, really. To be, or not to be, that is the question.....

Always wear my seatbelt if the vehicle is going to move more than five feet or exceed five miles per hour.
Helmet goes on if the bike is moving under its own power. If I'm pushing it around the driveway, I make do without a lid.

Here in Australia we have a law saying you gotta wear a helmet on a motorbike. Might sound stupid to some people, but i guess the Govt is just doing the obvious thing by making it a law that people have to protect themselves when they're going 60+ miles per hour with their a$$ two-and-a-half feet off the ground. Fair enough i rekon.

Here in Canada the seatbelt is also mandatory except in busses???I guess school kids won't get hurt in an accident...what with all those steel bar frames for the seats and all.
