Is a bike like this really worth this much?

I've heard that the older Japanese bikes are starting to jump in value as the baby boomers retire and yearn for machines from their youth, but is this bike really worth this much?

If UJMs have been getting expensive I haven't noticed. I paid $500 for my CX500 and its in great shape.
Actually that magna might be worth what hes asking as it appears to be an REALLY good shape. Also figure in a bit of wiggle room on the price. Hes asking 1800 probably figuring hes going to get 1400-1500 out of it.

So... in theory, if a guy was selling me essentially the same bike condition wise for $200... I should not let him see the light of day until I have the title in hand?

the rear wheel has never been cleaned still has chain goop all over it.
left muffler has dent in it from centerstand.
chain links are rusted.
looks like very poor maintenance with this owner.
i have one just like it except for all the neglect.
$1200 top price on that one.if the engine aint rattling like a sewing machine.

I looked at that ad and would say he's asking too much. That bike has been down on the left hand side at least once, and the top of the right fork looks like it might be stained from dirty fork oil.. which to me makes the front seals suspicious...
If the wheels are a testament to the way the bike was cared for, take a look at just how dirty they are, and the chain doesn't look much better. The grab rail has been removed...

New is better, just my opinion. But I don't like things that have been used and abused by any number of random roaches.

He's not exactly on the moon with that price for that bike, but it is too much in my opinion. Looks to be pretty clean... but not clean enough or low miles enough for $1800. If I were looking for that model and that year I'd pay that price but it would have to be a near perfect and sub 20,000 miles and one owner with receipts kind of situation. For some perspective I got an 85 700 magna with 38k earlier this year and it was just as clean if not cleaner and he threw in three brand new pieces of luggage and a helmet and helmet bag for $900. Deals like that aren't easy to find but in short I think that's more like a $1200-$1500(at the most) bike than an $1800 bike. Then again, it's a fairly popular bike, they ain't making any new ones and the price isn't wildly outrageous so he might ultimately get his price from someone who's time is more important than their money. At least he isn't asking $3500 like I occasionally see for similar bikes around here. For the record I'd rather pay a little too much for a used bike in good shape than a lot too much for a brand new one.

Hell, I'd buy that even if I didn't want another bike just so's I could turn around and make an easy $800 the next week!
