What do you think of the half helmets for cruising?

They look pretty comfy and cool for summer. Also probly can see better.
What is your opion and would or do you use one? DOT approved of course.

I would never use one
bug splats at 60mph hurt.
Besides, if you ever crash, your brainpan might remain intact, but your face is going to get spread over a large portion of the road.

I wouldn't use one either. But it beats nothing, which is what alot of people choose. Why not wear a football helmet with a full face cage it would probably provide more protection.

I have a half helmet that I bought in early summer. It's not one of those skid lids, the helmet is actually thick. I don't really like it, I usually wear a 3/4 helmet. You get a lot of wind noise with the half helmets, plus there not as safe.

Even if it weren't for the safety issue metioned above, I would still rather have a face shield to protect me. I wouldn't want all that crud I clean off my shield after each ride hitting my face.

Its all I use...(insert comments here)
Only wear DOT approved of course and agree about bugs stinging at any speed. Now I have my windshield the bugs aren't so much of a problem.
Wear proper riding glasses (they have padding insie the frames around the eyes) and always ride with your mouth CLOSED...people think cruisers are always pissed off...in reality they're trying not to have any highway grub.
The wind will be slightly louder, but it is nice to feel it on your face...

A half-helmet or Skid-Lid is a must if your neck of the woods gets hot at all in the summer and/or if, like me, you get hot easily. I didn't wear my full-face at all until the temperature got down to the 40's in the morning, then I just wore it for the warmth. I got a half-helmet with a face shield for my trip to The Dragon (states outside of Ohio have helmet laws) and I just picked-up a Skid-Lid a couple weeks ago and will see how that works out this summer. If it feels all right and isn't subject to air turbulance I'll probably start wearing it full-time, but if it sucks I'll go helmetless for yet another summer.

Can't bring myself to do this. I've booted around a parking lot a few times (nothing dangerous at all) with no helmet on and I love the feel of it. But on the road is a different story. I've always ridden with a full sheild on and have had huge bugs hit and splatter all over it, rocks hit it, etc. I've also had a buddy who was riding on the 401, some dude threw a smoke out his window, and it lodged itself inbetween his half-helmet and his face. He's lucky he didn't panic and drop the bike. Fortunatly he was able to pull over.

Somebody posted some stats on helmet impacts and 40% were around the chin area, I'll stick to my full face.

Ill keep my full face. Bugs and rocks hurt enough hitting places other than your face.
About the only thing less than a full face I would ever consider would be a 3/4 with a faceshield, and then only for short distances.
