Maybe a fuel delivery problem. When you use all the fuel in the carb, it can't fill it up fast enough? Would still idle with a small trickle of incomeing fuel.....
Is there a fuel filter on it?

check your needle & seat. carb could be running dry or it could be getting too much gas and flooding, shot needle & seat can cause either of these.
edit: oops forgot HDs only have 1 carb, im so used to multiple carbs from my bike and my VW.

not too sure about the older sportys, but I have seen this same problem in the newer ones. Check the ignition module, sometimes vibrations and heat could cause them to quit, espectially if it is 18 y/o.
