Tighten brakes?

#1 Unread post by Mag7C »

Lately my front brake has felt a bit weaker than usual. Weaker as in I must pull the brake handle further than I used to for the same power. I know the rear brake can be adjusted, but I couldn't seem to find anything for the front. Oh and I ride an '86 VF700C Magna. Should I replace the pads yet? Yeah I'm kinda stumped on what to do about it.

Could be one of two things

1. worn brake pads - easy to check and replace yourself.

You should be able to look into the caliper from the front and see the brake pads - if the pads are down to the wear lines, it's time to replace them.

2. moisture or air in the brake line/low brake fluid

If you have a manual (Haynes/Clymer) it should describe how you go about bleeding the brake system. Follow the instructions carefully and you should be okay. If you are unsure or not comfortable doing it yourself, then have your favorite local bike mechanic do it for you. It will cost more than doing it yourself, but the peace of mind will be worth it.

the slider pins in the caliper can rust causing this problem.
get a manual--it shows how to take caliper off and clean pins and
bushings in caliper.

If it comes down to it, bleeding them myself is no problem, I did it when I first bought the bike and changed out all the fluids. I'll check the calipers and pads and whatnot tomorrow.

Thanks for the quick responses.
