Database Help?

#1 Unread post by Sev »

Okay, so Mom's (and my) b-day is in... god just under 7 months. And I've already come up with an idea for her present. Currently she's got a cupbourd full of recipes: books, magazines, newspaper clippings, notecards, and everything else you can think of.

My goal, is over the next 7 months to create a database with all, or at least most of her recipes. Then throw the whole thing on an old laptop that's sitting on my desk. I've even got a space in the kitchen where it'll fit.

So I've come here for help or suggestions, I need a database program that will allow me to first of all enter everything related to a recipe. But it also needs to include multiple search terms ie: chocolate (brings up everything that is flagged as chocolate) and cookie (all cookies with chocolate) etc etc etc. You guys get the idea. Ideally something that allows for pictures to be saved as well. Simply because eating is a visual thing.

So can anyone offer a cheap suggestion.. at all?
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Why not something web-based? with cgi or something? Except stored on the HDD. I'm sure there's a search CGI script out there.

Any suggestions for how to get that done? I've never had to do anything remotely similar to this before.

I'm playing around with the Demo version of this program right now. It does almost everything that the betty crocker one does. Plus I can use it for other applications.

Now I need to talk to Mom and see if it's something that she'd actually use.
