Haven't found out how to take the carbs off yet

I'm hoping someone has experience with an 85 Magna V30... or a similar honda.
Right now i can't see how I'd take the carbs off without removing the engine. They are stacked between the engine and the airbox. The airbox is bolted to the carbs from the inside and the frame runs right over the top of the airbox leaving no room to get it off.
I might be able to get this puppy going without cleaning out the carbs but I generally clean them when I'm reworking a bike.
Any ideas? Anyone out there know the trick?

What does your repair manual say?
... you do have a repair manual, right? Even a Clymer's is better than a jab with a sharp stick.

Repair manual is in the mail. Allow 2-3 weeks for delivery as of this past monday. If anyone has a repair manual for this bike and wouldn't mind photocopying it... anyone? No? Maybe? Ok- we'll wait for that person to answer before returning to the look at the manual angle.
I have the gas tank off. It was two mighty bolts and a retaining pin... but I was mightier. I also have the throttle and choke cables disconnected as well as the fuel line. The c clamps holding the carbs on are loose. I just can't figure out how to remove the damned thing when there's no room to lift it up or tilt it without hitting the frame ontop. I tried to take the lid off the airbox. There's not enough room to do that but wit hteh bolts removed the middle will slide around about an inch to either direction. I tried removing the coil to get some room towards the rear but that didn't work. I am at your mercy 9000white- don't let this bike sit for those extra weeks, it's screaming to run sooner... in a silent makes no noise sense of the word.

take the left front frame cover and the tank mounting bracket off the left side.there is a vent hose in front of the air cleaner housing that is hard to see it is in the middle of case--take hose off.hold top cover of air filter housing up against frame pull filter housing out from left side.it is going to get caught on everything keep wiggling and pulling it will come out.do not bend top cover more than is absolutely necessary although it is plastic when you bend it it stays bent and will not seal when you put it back on. spray some wd40 or the like on the carb boots with clamps loose.you will have to pry the carbs from boots.dont pry on something that will bend or break.when you get carbs off drain fuel from them then tie throttle linkage open and take vacuum cleaner and place it on engine side of carb to see if each diaphragm is working.dont take anything off carbs but float bowls.i need to know if the carbs are VD58A or VD58C this is stamped above where float bowl mates to carb.

Thanks 9000white
I'll look at the stamped on numbers when I finish this project for work and get back to working on the bike. Why would I not take anything off but the float bowls?
One of the things I know I have to do is clean the choke pulls. Two of them are sticking and keeping the choke from engaging.

if you remove the emulsion tubes that the main jets screw into be sure to keep each one marked or in a separate container for each carb they are different for the front and back--if you have VD50C carbs the jet needles are different on 1 and 4 and 2 and 3--if the diaphragms move freely with vacuum cleaner there is no need to take them out unless you are going to have the carbs dipped--dont spray any carb cleaner where it can get on rubber diaphragms it will ruin them and they cost much.if you are going to reuse bowl gaskets dont take them out of the groove.

Ok-
Got them off and all up to snuff. Problem is now that I can't get them back on. No matter how I try I can get three of them back on their boots but the forth is a good half an inch off. To make matters worse, my favorite air force mechanic friend to a swing at it (literally) and took a piece off teh bottom of the airbox which really pissed me off. I'm going to go get that reattached. Any thoughts on getting the carbs back on? I'd imagine this wouldn't be as specific to the bike as to v-4s

sounds alot like the carbs on my kat. grew plenty of grey hairs, and developed a great dislike for non magnetic socket sets
