Hey, I'm new to this forum so this shall be my first post -- And what a better way to break the ice with the infamous "What Starter Bike Should I Get?" question! =P

So anywho, I'm new to the motorcycle world too, but plan on taking the MSF course pretty soon (probably the around the second half of this year). So on with my question.

I was told by a friend that anything carburated is pretty much good for a starter sport bike. Is that true?

Now I know a fuel injected bike at 600cc like lets say a gsxr600 is quite possibly one of the worst choices you could make when choosing a starter bike, but what about the ZZR600 and the Ninja 650R? My other choice would be a GS500F but that bike's pretty much known for being an awesome starter bike so I don't need anything on that.

go with the GS, the rest are not starter bikes.

From what I've gathered:

Ducati Monster600
Kawasaki GPZ 500
Kawasaki Ninja 500 (AKA EX)
Kawasaki Vulcan 500
Suzuki SV650
Suzuki V-Strom / DL 650
Suzuki GS 500 (Bandit)
Suzuki GSF600 (Bandit)
Suzuki GSX600 (Katana)
Yamaha FZ6
Honda CB 500/600
Honda Shadow 600
Buell Blast

Some of those may be wrong. Like say the V-Strom, but I just haven't editted the text document I've been stashing this info in yet so, yah...

650r is a no go. YOU might be able to learn on it but its risky because its a pretty quick bike, read the 650s are good learner 650s are bad learner bikes post at the top of this forum.
As for the ZZr, well ive been riding for close to 7 months ona ninja 500 and im going to be buying a ZZr on monday. I think if you cafeful and naturally decent at riding it could work. I would say that its not a good learner bike though, do-able but not the best choice. You may not want to but you may have to bite the bullet and go with something small, "boring" or to little to start with. While you may think that, small weenie bikes are no good. Trust me they will be plenty quick and plenty fun for a while. So id say the GS is the best there but you may look at others as well. And are you thinking of buying new or used?

Well, I was leaning towards the ZZr and the GS500F anyway. Definitely used though. Pretty sure I'm gonna drop it at least once if not quite a few times...would really suck to drop a brand new bike

Cool. Either bike will work if your careful and dont try and show off. The GS will be a little easyer though.

well thats what i got for my first bike and its been great to learn on!

Now this is the third person that's told me that a GSXr600 is okay to start on, but only if you don't be stupid. Now starting on a gixxer would be real cool no doubt..but yeah..I know it's really looked down upon..but any input on that, other than insane insurance rates?

Though I'm sure this topic has been covered extensively before..
