how much insurance?

Hi all,

What sort of insurance should I get for my bike? (this is in Los Angeles)

- liability only?
- uninsured/underinsured?
- comprehensive?

I'm definitely not getting collision insurance -- it's just not worth it. But I'm wondering about the other stuff. Also, how much liability coverage should I get?

The previous owner of the bike said he and everyone he knows have only the basic 15K liability insurance. Does that sound right to you?

thanks,

Eugene

it all depends. My bike is so cheap that i just have basic coverage, casue its not worth repairing. If you want your bike on insurance then go for it. I just cant spend enough and dont want to spend the money to insure it. Plus im not totally sure how all that other insurance works so i try to just pay as little as possible. Sorry that this wasent a very informative post.

ok, so do you have the underinsured coverage? Just wondering if I should get that.

(The whole underinsured thing is weird though cause you're basically paying for insurance twice).

thanks,

Eugene

it depends.

for me i need comprehensive since the bike's on loan plus my bike's very expensive. i still owe thousands even though i have put a big down payment.

if you're bike doesn't have that much value just get a liability. that's what i do for my car since it's a '92 Acura Integra.

I agree with JWF. I just carry the minimum. But that depends on your bike If I had a New or Expensive bike I would probally carry more. What I will say is un/underinsursed motorist coverage is to protect you in case you are hit by an un/underinsured motorist. That is one type I do carry. Usually the ppl that carry insurance are the ones that pay attention the ones that dont are the ones that dont. A lot of ppl that dont carry insurance are the ones that no longer can get insurance. that is when you need that type of coverage. there you go my 2 cents worth. :frusty:

If your beast is newer, get the comprehensive. I like rolling with protection against uninsured drivers; cause they suck. Personally, I wouldn't roll with under a million liability.

What's an average figure for insurance on a newer bike? Any suggestions which company? I'm looking at a 2005 650 bandit. First time owner and I've taken the motorcycle safety course.

there's so many stuff to consider plus some companies charge differently so you really have to shop around.

driver record, age, school grades, number of vehicles in the policy, vehicle price, etc. so many stuff affects insurance price.

me, im 25 yr old, '06 suzuki gixxer1000(comprehensive) + '92 acura integra(liability), w/ traffic ticket (could have been $300 cheaper if i didn't have the ticket) = $1900/yr. w/ AAA.

even though my car only has liability... in that $1900, half of that is for my car alone. which makes sense since cars can do a lot more dmg than bikes.

My insurance company doesn't insure motorcycles, at least I'm pretty sure they don't, i better make sure of that . I'm with Allstate, overall I'm fairly satisfied with them and I am not really willing to leave. But I guess if I had too.

For me I'm 34 Full coverage on 2 vehicles, '00 Honda Civic SI and '05 Nissan X-Trail, plus house insurance. No convictions or claims.

they'll prbably give you a good deal since you have so many policies w/ them and you're probably a long time customer.
