tune up for suzuki gs500

Hello all,

I finally bought my first motorcycle and had some questions. I've been told it was a good idea to have a professional mechanic give it a tune up. What does this usually go for? If I were to try to do this myself, what kind of things should I work on (besides changing the oil, replacing filter). Thanks in advance for your help.

I got quoted about 220 bucks for the tune up I plan on getting done here pretty soon.
Since I don't know the repair history, they just went on how many miles it had. They had a little guide that said what to do at what mileage intervals, and since my bike happens to have 22k on the clock, it gets the whole deal.
I think I remember them saying that it includes chain adjustment, valve adjustment, carb cleaning, carb balancing, fluid change, filter change.....uh...I know there's more...but I forgot what it was

Anyway, hope that helps a little. Good choice as a first bike too, so far I love my GS

(only had it for a couple months, only been riding for a couple weeks)

Thanks for the input skoebl! I will look into all the things you mentioned. If you don't already have one, I added a link for a service manual for the gs500. I just ordered mine from amazon, I heard its a good companion to the owner's manual you get from suzuki.

Heh, I'm in the opposite position. I bought the Clymer manual before I even bought my bike. What I don't have is the owner's manual
