I'm looking for a disc lock and am unsure as to how to go about it. I typed in a search on google and came back with hundreds of results. What are some essentials I should be looking at in a disc lock? Are they all basically the same? Any brands that you guys reccomend?

I am kinda looking, but a reminder cable that locks to the lock and stretches to the cluch lever is mandatory so you don't try driving off with the lock attached. In fact, it would be nice if some jokester couldn't take the warning cable off the clutch lever and hide it.

You also need to know the size of the holes in your disk, and the thickness.

Hopefully, others have more info.

I bought the NY disk lock from Kryptonite, it looks and feels very sturdy and heavy. In fact the only downside is the weight and price, it weighs about 1.5 lbs and costs around $60. However I found mine on ebay for cheaper. There was somebody on this site that did a in depth review on it. I would definitly say this is one of the safest locks out there. But check it out for yourself. I couldn't get the link to stay, but you can cut and paste this for the review.

Thanks for the link as well. The lock is going to be a very sound invesment. I'm nervous about taking this bike to school, where as the older 83' no one seemed the least bit interested in.

The idea sounds interesting, except I hate the concept of a screeching alarm...i know i'm not the only one that can't stand the idiotic car alarms that go off with the slightest tap.

If your worried about somebody being able to cut the lock I would definitly say go with the NY disk lock. I can't see anybody being able to get this thing off. Just don't lose your key!!

cutting the lock isnt such a problem as people picking it. the old round tumbler style locks have been shown to be easy to pick, stay away form the round key ones. the new pick key style lock is supposed to be much better.

a friend of mine always used a simple rubber coated pad lock, seemd to work just fine, had a good key system, very sturdy, and was cheap. anything ment for a motorcycle is going to cost a fortune compared to a simple padlock that will do the same thing for you.

I use Kyrptonite Disc lock and always lock up rear rotor. Went to dollar store and bought bright pink keychain coil and place on throttle to remind me that I have lock on. The reason I place lock on rear is because thieves can run dolly under front wheel and drag whole bike away....so if you have disc lock on rear it makes it that much harder to roll. Of course if they really want my bike...they could simply pick up the whole thing and toss it into the back of a pickup.....so I always try and lock up bike by cable to solid object......the things we have to do......damm thieves anyways!

Mentioned this in another thread on the same subject . Spousette and I both bought "Bully" Brand disc locks at our local stealership for $24.99 per .
Good investment , looks fairly pick proof as well as cut proof . And looks as if it will fit any and all discs .
