How is the safety of this style helmet?

I'm sure not as good as a full face, but does the face shield provide any protection in an accident or will it just shatter and destroy my face?

That seems like the shield would break if your chin area hits the ground first. I don't like it personally, but I'm no expert on helmet construction either.

Ya, i was thinking it probably does nothing more than a regular 3/4 helmet other than provide some wind protection.

I wouldn't wear it. You hit your chin and it's gonna smash in your mouth.

No, the face shield will afford you no additionial crash protection. It's good for keeping bugs, rocks and wind off your face, but won't keep that same face from being smeared on the asphalt should you suddenly find yourself in that situation at even realitvely slow speeds.

Have you looked at any of the flip-face helmets out there? They provide full face protection with the convenience of exposing your face when you want to and don't want to remove your helmet completely. Just a thought.

try a modular flip face HJC... they go for about $114 bucks, and are pretty nice.

Wouldn't a flip-face just go up if you hit your chin? I'm sure it has a locking mechanism but Unless it's like, the end-all-be-all of holding strength, I doubt it'd remain in place from a direct blow to the chin.

I figure it this way - it's GOT to be better than your chin hitting the pavement directly at that angle compared to the helmet hitting and the flip face popping up.

Now, I don't believe that there's a flip face that has a Snell rating, but if the face piece flipped up, I doubt that it would pass the DOT tests. I think this article may help you out....
