We are a little on the over-safe side, but we are looking to get our 8 and 10 year old out with us so we can do some family riding. Our only reservation so far has been not being able to find good riding gear for our youngest (my daughter). She's pretty small, so not even the smallest adult stuff would fit her. I think this year will be the year, so I'll keep folks posted here as I find a solution.

I wouldn't let my sons ride with me until they could put their feet on the pegs without stretching. That turned out to be 6 -7 yrs old. Never went more than 5 -10 miles the first year they rode, because kids have such short attention spans. I also tried to keep the routes away from high traffic areas as much as possible.

Motorcycle cruiser magazine had an article about this a couple of months ago. The author talked about where to find appropriate sized gear as well as a device that would keep them upright in case they fell asleep on longer rides. I think his/her criteria was also that they must be able to touch the pegs without stretching.
Poke around on the site and you're sure to find it, I think it was under "street survival."
