newbie tank protector question

what do those carbon fibre tank protectors do?

From what I hear, nothing. Just decoration.
Or to keep the zipper on your jacket (or any other metallic objects in that region) from scratching the tank.

Stops your tummy from rubbing off the paint, or your zipper from scratching it. And I don't think any of them are made of real carbon fibre, since a plastic one would weigh about as much as a CF one there's no reason to get the lighter one.
