riding across santa monica mountains

#1 Unread post by ninja79 »

Hi all,

I know a few of you are in LA. Have you rode across santa monica mountains? I'm planning to do that this weekend. My landlord, who used to ride a long time ago, tells me it's a very popular place.

well, I did it! Started on Mulholland Drive and went up the mountain. Nice curves, very scenic ride. Then got lost, came down the mountain, and somehow got to Topanga Canyon. WOW!!!! That was incredible. The road goes through a canyon in Santa Monica mountains. Smooth road, very nice curves. You could call it a mini-dragon. It goes all the way to the ocean, which is where I wanted to get to eventually. So I rode on the pacific coast highway for a while, then took Sunset blvd home. It has some nice curves for the first half of the way. Was tired but very happy. This was my first canyon ride!

sounds like fun. congrats!

i have tried the mulholland viewpoint and it's very hard.

i went to angeles crest yesterday and it was hard too but only bec it was hailing, snowing, and foggy. i can easily tell that it will be super fun on a warm sunny day.

i posted a topic about LA TMW riders to plan a meeting some time. post there if you want to join in planning.

Where is that? I certainly want to go on another ride through the mountains next weekend.

Oh yeah, you said you were practicing at the rosebowl. Is there some track for practicing or is it just a curvy road?

As far as I know they (they being the groups that go there) just practice in the parking lot; setting up cones etc etc.

I know that So-Cal Sportbikes holds skills days and such there every once in a while.

it's on the new biker forum.

and nope, i like the rose bowl bec it's has some huge parking lots that isn't busy when there's no event at the stadium. it's great for practicing the basics and hopefully, i get to practice getting a knee down over there.

the skillzday is held on the verizon amphitheater not the rose bowl.

their parking lot is better than the rose bowl. much less busy and much bigger.

One trip that I really like is into Rose Canyon in Sespe National Forest. In fact anywhere in Sespe is a great ride. The only caveot is that in order to stop an take in the scenery you need a wilderness pass. The pass costs $5.00 per day and is avaliable at the ranger stations. Here is a link to a Sespe National Forest website.
