To Drop or not to Drop...

We've all heard the biker guarantee..."there's riders who've been down and riders who are going down I think there are enough riders here to dispell or confirm this myth...I just can't believe every rider everywere has or will hit the ground.

While most people drop in their first year not all do. At some point in time you will likely go into a corner too hard, hit some black ice, hit some gravel, hit a manhole cover, get into a tankslapper and hit your brakes, who knows?

But I wouldn't take one year of no drops as any future indication of riding.

I think that the large majority of people drop. There are some that don't drop, just like there are some people who are born as prodigies. But they're definately not the majority.

The whole thing is over-emphasized. I think it is a "saying" and as most sayings, it is a generalization. It sure does get a lot of people worked up. I've seen more people argue about this topic than abortion rights. It is not a forgone conclusion that you will ever drop your bike. Good luck.

ps - For the record I dropped my bike in my first year and after that too. I think I was careless and clumsy. If I'd used more care none of my drop incidents would have happened. IMHO.

I got a 750cc Shadow as a starter bike. I learned to drive it quickly, but on gravel in my driveway. I dropped it 3 times in the first week of owning it. (it was used, but in mint condition). This was Very discouraging, but I havent dropped it since and all the times I did drop it were at a stand still so no damage (I always say how durable my bike is.. lol). Its scary to think about "dropping" it while in motion! haha but I wouldnt say it wont happen; just hope I can get past it when/if it does

I think the size of my bike has kept me from trying things a smaller bike would tempt me to do. Also, I know if I dropped it, I'd be hard pressed to afford whatever I destroyed.

I dropped mine once at a stop sign when my foot found a pothole. Only damange was a few scratches, still makes me glad I bought a $500 beater for my first bike

It is not inevitable that you drop your bike. It is likely, though.

How long have you been walking? Probably got it pretty downpat, eh? Ever stumble or trip?

dodo happens. You can drive yourself nutz trying predict when/where/why or worry yourself into dreading the bike if you want. Or you can just keep your head up and ride.

No one intends to drop, but bad stuff happens. Ever spilled your drink? Or like BuzZz said, tripped while walking? You don't want it to happen, but that doesn't mean it won't.

I agree with Sev, S**t happens. The best we can do is drive within our individual abilities and have a blast doing it.
