First bike?

Hey all, I been lurking around here for awhile and am looking to buy a starter bike. I wanted to start with a 650 but I just got a lead on someone selling a 1984 KZ1000M1 1000 cc with 36k miles on it for only $1300.

Anyone think this is a good deal, and how would a new biker like me, 5'11'' 190 lbs fare on a 1000cc bike? I took the MSF course and have ridden a few bikes since, but nothing that big yet...

What do yall think?

Probably not that old. Though it is an older bike but it'd still be around 650cc by today's standards (if even that low).

You'd probably be better (and safer) on a 500cc.

I wouldn't recommend it as a first bike. I've owned both the Z1 (900cc) and a '79 Z1000, both prone to high speed wobbles though the Z1000 was a fair improvement on the Z1. I'd imagine the 1984 model would be an improvement in the handling department but still not a starter bike IMO.

Are you sure about the year? I seem to recall that the KZ1000M1 was a 1981 model.

Either way, in my opinion it would be a handful for a new rider.

You'd better be pretty handy at motorcycle mechanics if you want to ride something that old. You will have to deal with a number of age related problems, and most motorcycle shops will not work on something that old. If you do take the plunge, KZRider.com will be your best friend.
