so there's this 79 suzuki gs 850 for sale, haven't seen it but am told it's in good shape, is $1800 CDN too much for this bike?

So that is 1500 bucks USD. Kelly Blue Book lists that bike at 920.00 (kbb.com). cycletrader has one listed for 3500.00(cycletrader.com), and there are several for sale on E-bay, but none are over 600.00 so far. You will need to do some research in your area and determin if this is a desireable bike, collectible and what not.
The true value of a bike comes from how bad you want it and what you are willing to spend to get the bike you really want.
If this is a bike you are interested in for riding and not for collecting, then I think the price is a little high for that age, unless it is showroom clean and runs as beautifully.

For that price it should be pretty close to mint, and relatively low miles. For anything in average shape of that age, a good rule of thumb is $1/cc, American.

Seems a little steep, unless it had very low kms and doesn't need a thing, such as tires, how are the brakes and lines, any rust in the tank, etc.
