1984 GL1200 Honda Aspencade

Hi Everyone
I have recently purchased a 1984 Aspencade and have heard that the charging systems on these bikes were weak. Is this a true statement and if so how can I correct this problem.

The connector where the stator wires plug together corrodes making a bad electrical connection and shortens the life of the stator. Most guys just cut the connectors off and hard wire the wires (solder and cover with heat srink tubing) If you lose a stator there is even a automotive alternator conversion out there for the 4 cyl Wings. However if your bike is charging good and is "hard wired" you shouldnt have anything to worry about. Hope this helps.

My friend downs the street has one. He's never complained about that but has mentioned having to replace a timing chain often and a re-occuring oil leak at the speedo connection on the right side of the engine.

Thank you for replying to my question . I will check to see if the stator is hard wiried and check to see if the speedo is leaking.

On the front of your engine there is a timing belt cover that runs from one head to the other. Your timing belts are located behind this 2 piece case. If your belts have been replaced within the last 5 years or 50.000 miles you shouldn't have anything to worry about. However if they need replaced you need to get it exactly right or you will destroy your engine. The belts are available from NAPA auto parts stores a lot cheaper than from parts providers for bikes. Do not attempt to install them without a shop manual (Honda preffered) I have a Clymer and it covered it pretty good. The job is not that bad but if it is not done correctly you WILL trash your engine. If you decide you need to change out the belts just PM me or post here and I'll get you that NAPA part #. Also if you pull one of the cases and the belts look cracked (age) or worn you should replace them. Good luck, you'll have a fine ol bike when you get that ol 1200 al ready to go.
