2014 BMW S1000R Review

2014 BMW S1000R on Totalmotorcycle.com

THE ALL-NEW S 1000 R. CONQUER THE STREETS…

The BMW S 1000 R – new high-performance roadster based on the S 1000 RR.

Superbike riding dynamics and powerful, emotive roadster styling – these are the hallmarks of the new BMW S 1000 R. The new naked bike from BMW Motorrad is directly derived from the S 1000 RR superbike and uses the same innovative technology. The close family resemblance to the “RR” is instantly obvious. The pared down appearance of the new S 1000 R exudes an aggressive, dynamic energy. Based on a well-thought-out overall concept, with 160 hp maximum power and a weight of 207 kg, as well as Race ABS, ASC and a choice of two riding modes as standard, the BMW S 1000 R sets new standards in the sports roadster segment.

In-line four-cylinder engine with optimised low to mid-range performance.
When modifying the S 1000 RR’s 999 cc four-cylinder in-line engine for use in the S 1000 R, the engineers were looking in particular to provide punchy response all the way through the rpm range. To provide the ideal set-up both for everyday use and for sporty riding on the open road, they significantly increased the low and mid-range power and torque. At the same time, maximum rpm has been reduced by approximately 2,000 rpm. Maximum power of 118 kW (160 hp) is reached at 11,000 rpm and peak torque of 112 Nm (approx. 83 lb-ft) at 9,250 rpm. Up to 7500 rpm, this engine version develops 10 Newton metres (approx. 7 lb-ft) more torque than the S 1000 RR. This provides punchy low-end response that is ideal on twisty single-carriageway roads. Among other things, this was achieved by using redesigned cylinder head ducts, modified cam profiles and appropriately modified engine management. The new BMS-X engine management system also supports an E-Gas “throttle-by-wire” system.

ASC (Automatic Stability Control), Race ABS and a choice of two riding modes as standard. Riding mode Pro with two additional modes and DTC optionally available.
For optimal adaptation to different conditions and rider requirements, the S 1000 R comes with two riding modes and ASC (Automatic Stability Control) as standard. The “Rain” and “Road” modes cater to different road surface conditions using different power and torque curves, and applying different levels of Race ABS and ASC intervention. This provides an important safety bonus, particularly under changeable road conditions.

Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), incorporating a further two riding modes – “Dynamic” and “Dynamic Pro” – is available as an ex-works option. This option allows riders to make the most of the S 1000 R’s sporty performance potential both on the road and on the race track. Dynamic Traction Control, which includes a banking angle sensor, offers safe and dynamic acceleration which is currently state-of-the-art for a production motorcycle.

Innovative chassis and suspension technology with large damping reserves and high-performance brakes. Dynamic Damping Control (DDC) optionally available.
However ambitious the riding style, the chassis and suspension of the S 1000 R is a match for the dynamic power delivery of the four-in-line engine. Based on that of the S 1000 RR, it uses the proven aluminium alloy perimeter frame, in which the engine forms part of the load-bearing structure. As on the RR, an adjustable upside-down fork and a dual swingarm with adjustable central spring strut guide the wheels front and rear. Roadster-specific suspension requirements are met by a slight change in geometry. As on the RR, vigorous, stable and above all safe braking is provided by a braking system that comprises a twin-disc brake with two radial 4-piston fixed callipers at the front and a single-disc brake at the rear, with partially integral Race ABS. Dynamic Damping Control (DDC), available as an ex-works optional extra, offers the benefits of electronic damping control. For further enhanced performance, in combination with enhanced active safety, this system dynamically adapts the damping to the current riding situation with split-second speed.

Dynamic styling.
The new S 1000 R’s sports roadster personality is also mirrored in the styling. With its “tail up – nose down” stance, the S 1000 R’s appearance immediately suggests aggressive performance and dynamism. Like the RR, the S 1000 R, too, is distinctive and instantly recognisable. It has a face that stands out in a crowd.

Multifunctional instrument cluster.
Last but not least, race-inspired features also extend to the cockpit of the S 1000 R. With an LC display with analogue rev counter, the instrumentation offers an unrivalled amount of information in this segment, from the gear display and riding mode display to a lap timer. For optimal gear changes, an individually programmable quick-shifter is fitted.

2014 BMW S1000R Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

Conquer the roads – on the BMW S 1000 R.

A roadster, reduced to the essentials: maximum performance. 160 bhp, 83 lb/ft torque and a power-to-weight ratio of 2.85 pounds per bhp – and the competition disappears in the rear mirror.

Linear power: the engine.

The high-performance 4-cylinder in-line engine derives from the RR but has now been further optimized. The result: extremely linear torque delivery for constant forward drive across the entire engine rev range. The engine of the S 1000 R has an output of 160 bhp/118 kW at 11,000 rpm, while a maximum of 83 lb/ft torque at 9,250 rpm puts a smile on the rider’s face at every twist of the throttle.

Ready for attack: the design.

The lines of the S 1000 R are striking at first sight, too: aggressive tail-up/nose-down design, distinctive split face and the characteristic gills. The “R” shows much less of its sharp-edged, muscular skin. Some people call it naked – we just call it focused on the essentials.

Versatile: the riding modes.

The S 1000 R can be reigned in and unleashed at the press of a button as standard. The “Rain” mode provides a gentle throttle response, with ABS and ASC adapted to wet road surfaces. Meanwhile “Road” optimizes throttle response, ABS and ASC for dry asphalt. The Pro modes are available as an optional extra for those chasing the threshold range: “Dynamic” and “Dynamic Pro” get the “R” into shape for the limits.

Full control: Race ABS and ASC as standard.

Power is nothing without control. The S 1000 R is fitted with Race ABS and ASC (automatic stability control) as standard. This duo ensures excellent acceleration and deceleration figures at threshold level. They can be activated and deactivated during travel, making for uninterrupted riding fun.

No compromises: the individualization options.

The “Standard” package adds Ride Modes Pro (Rain, Road + Dynamic, Dynamic Pro), gear shift assist, DTC (dynamic traction control) and cruise control. The “Premium” package includes all equipment in the “Standard” package plus DDC (dynamic damping control semi-active suspension), heated grips and engine spoiler. There will also be an extensive range of HP parts for the S 1000 R aimed at ambitious riders.

Engine

The S 1000 R is powered by the legendary high-performance 4-cylinder in-line engine from the S 1000 RR. But it has been optimised for use in the roadster.

• 10 Nm more than the S 1000 RR

• Extremely linear power delivery across the entire engine speed range

• Maximum of 112 Nm torque at 9,250 rpm

• Peak output of 160 bhp/118 kW at 11,000 rpm
Suspension: Race ABS and ASC.

The S 1000 R is fitted with Race ABS and ASC (automatic stability control) as standard. This sets the benchmark in terms of dynamic performance and safety in the bike’s segment.

• Part integral Race ABS as standard for optimum deceleration.

• Clear feedback in the hand lever to detect threshold range

• Can be deactivated while riding

• Ultra-light system, virtually maintenance-free

• ASC ensures optimum acceleration on all road surfaces

• Both systems are perfectly interconnected and their regulation response is very simple to adapt via the standard riding modes Road/Rain
Suspension: DDC and DTC

The S 1000 R features a highly active electronic suspension which is able to adapt to riding conditions within milliseconds, thereby enabling agility and dynamic performance.

• DTC is an assistance system with banking sensor which supports maximum possible throttle response and prevents rear wheel spin when there is reduced friction on the road surface. Maximum traction and agility as well as an additional safety bonus

• DDC: Dynamic Damping Control directly from the BMW HP4. Here the suspension adapts electronically within milliseconds to the surface and situation on the road.

• Characteristics and damping properties change from “pleasant” to “tight” depending on the riding modes selected, riding situation and road surface. The suspension supports the rider without the latter having to make any mechanical adjustments to the damper compression and rebound stage
Suspension: Riding modes

The riding modes available for the S 1000 R perfectly interconnect the individual systems of throttle response, ABS control response, traction control (ASC or DTC) and suspension (DDC or load state) for a dynamic but safe ride on varying road surfaces and in different weather conditions.

As standard:

• Rain mode for a gentle throttle response and sensitive ASC/ABS control response on wet road surfaces

• Road mode for optimum throttle response and optimum ASC/ABS control response for excellent acceleration and deceleration on dry roads

• The riding modes are simple to select by pressing a button and confirmed by closing the throttle and are shown on the display screen

Pro riding modes available with optional DTC or Sports package:

• Dynamic mode for optimum throttle response on dry roads with reduced lift detection function in the front and rear wheel when braking. DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) enables more dynamic acceleration in banking position

• Dynamic Pro mode is designed for very ambitious sports riders and can only be activated by means of a coded plug. DTC enables optimum acceleration with sports tyres on a dry surface. The ABS allows brake drifts using the footbrake but without having to dispense with ABS functions at the front wheel. The front and rear wheel lift detection function is deactivated.
Suspension: Steering damper

The suspension of the S 1000 R is fitted as standard with a mechanical steering damper which ensures optimum stability even on varying surfaces and at high speeds.
Options

The extensive range of options gives the rider the opportunity to optimise the motorbike according to personal preferences. Two packages are available for this purpose:

• “Sport” package For dynamic, sporty-oriented rider; includes the Pro riding modes (Dynamic, Dynamic Pro), DTC, shift assistant for even faster acceleration and cruise control

• Also: Extensive range of HP parts for the S 1000 R
