The GS500 is a great bike to learn on. My GF just got one and she loves it. Maintenance is as cheap and simple as it gets when it comes to motorcycles. Now the Seca II was my first road bike and it was great! Dunno anything about the FZR.

High Octane doesn't describe the quality of the gas it describes it's properties. You need high octane on most motorcycles because of it's compression ratio. The higher the octane the harder it is for it too explode. So i don't think it;s the type of gas. Check Your plugs. Maybe you got some water i...

100 MPH in second gear? RPM's would have to be through the roof.
I ride a Z1000. For me is more how fast I go from 50 MPH to 100 MPH than how fast I can go. I also go to the track a few times a year, once you're in the track you'll use all of the power your bike's got.

Add to the black ice idea cold rubber. It remains more hard and less grippy. I stay off the roads below 35 F myself. I've seen bike out in much colder though.
+1

Glad you're OK though!

Awesome story and restoration! great job! I have one question: did you polish the metal such as pipes, handlebars, suspension....? or replaced them? If you polished them what product did you use? they look amazing and I'm in the middle of restoring a 1971 Honda CL450 it doesn't have as much history ...
