Won't start unless it's in neutral -- what's wrong?

My 1980 Honda CB 750K won't start when it's in any gear other than neutral. I recently replaced the clutch lever and I wonder if I messed up something? I read something about a clutch switch, and I wonder if it's gone bad? Is there some way to test the clutch switch without replacing it? Is it ...

I got it! I stuck a screwdriver into the screw hole in the lever, and squeezed the lever; this moved the pivot point far enough away from the perch that I was able to get a vice grip on the cable in order to hold the cable while I removed it from the lever.

1980 Honda CB750K Clutch Lever Replacement

What's the trick to getting the clutch cable out of the lever? I've removed the pivot screw from the lever, and turned the adjusting screw, but can't figure how to get the cable loose enough to get it out of the slot in the lever. Any (and all) suggestions will be appreciated.
