2004 BMW R1200C Montauk

BMW Montauk - Masters the mountains, rolls on the range.

Whether cutting through mountain gaps or rolling along open plains, the new
BMW Montauk was built for long rides through big sky country. Packed full of torque
(72 lb/ft), its got ample energy to ascend winding mountain roads and an updated
5-speed gearbox to keep the miles rolling by smoothly.

The new Montauk also features BMW’s two spark ignition system, an advancement that improves exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and response, setting a new benchmark for cruiser performance.

Stylistically, the Montauk retains the clean, elegant lines of the classic
R 1200 C but with a few extras to give it a presence all its own. Complementing the purity of the open design, the Montauk features a subtle windshield, extending riding comfort on long stretches of road.

Like its touring cousin the R 1200 CL, the Montauk takes a broader stance with a widened BMW Telelever suspension up front and vertically arranged dual headlights. The new Montauk looks equally imposing from the side. A higher, narrower passenger seat and redesigned side cover give the Montauk a powerful profile.

A blast from BMW's past! Their "first modern cruiser", the R1200C. 2004 was the last year for a BMW cruiser till they introduced the 2017 BMW K1600B bagger 13 years later.

I didn't like them when they were new, and I still don't. Uncool.

Wow, I'm not sure how to feel about this. "A" for effort? I appreciate that it was so different from the rest of the cruiser market at the time, by maintaining BMW signatures like shaft drive, Telelever front end, and of course, a boxer twin. I appreciated that it looked different and wasn't trying to ape H-D. But . . . it still looked so weird. For bravery, and going their own way, I give it a grudging cool.

Oh boy. When the BMW R1200C Montauk came out, I thought this was the Pontiac Azteck of the motorcycle world, the front looks futuristically wrong but the back end looked like it was from a Ducati nightmare. Today, they are interesting to see and I do turn my head to look at one, although, I quickly remember why I didn't like them.

But I'll give credit to BMW for trying something so... oddly different. We need that kind of innovation, R&D and "let's put it out there" attitude. And even though the bike gets a fail from me, BMW gets an Awesome for building it.
