Carb issues

#1 Unread post by Mintbread »

I have recently rejetted my '03 1200 Bandit and switched to pod filters. Once fitted it ran beautifully and gained a stack of power. Now I am having a bit of trouble with what appears to be poor fuel delivery. Under 4000rpm it runs fine and it also goes quite well under full accelleration at any rpm (but haslost some power). Above 4000rpm it is inconsistent and feels like I am dropping a cylinder intermitently. I went out today on a nice stretch of straight road and it surged and chugged so badly that I was unable to maintain a constant speed.

I am stuck as to the direction to take to resolve this. Any thoughts?

try putting the stock airbox back on - i was having major problems about the 4000 rpm range with no filters on it, when i put the airbox back on it worked perfectly. from what i have heard the pod filters dont get equal airflow since 2 are getting more air (the outer ones) than the other 2

when i upgraded my nighthawk i added a k&n but got one that fits in the stock airbox, keeps everything equal.

hope this helps.

Since I have a stage III jet kit the airbox is no longer good enough. With the Bandit pods are essential above stage II because more air is needed.

It's possible you dropped a main jet (Didn't tighten it enough and it fell into the float bowl) It would explain a few of your symptoms.

Well, I pulled the carbs out again double-checked the float levels just to be sure and looked over the jets whilst there and all was well.
I then went over the trouble-shooting guide that came with the jet kit and it seemed to indicate that I was running lean at higher rpm's and to adjust the needle height as required.
Upon removal of the first needle I noticed that I was missing a washer from the assembly:

I installed the rogue washers in their proper locations but was of the opinion that they will not change the needle height so should make little difference to performance.
After a test ride it appears I was wrong. :frusty:
