Riding Gloves

#1 Unread post by zarakand »

What sort of riding gloves do you guys wear in winter/spring? The ones I currently have are Joe Rocket with fun little air vents. Image
:cold:
Very cold after an hour so in this weather! Do most of you have seperate winter/summer riding gloves? Or do you wear a pair of mittens within the gloves?

I have a seperate pair of gloves that are waterproof/windproof for colder/inclement weather.

I buy gear to match the conditions that I am riding in (which is why I have two jackets, two pairs of gloves (soon to be three pairs) and a pair of waterproof/windproof overpants)

My foul weather jacket is good for riding in any conditions below 24 degrees C thanks to the removeable insulated liner and I have an armored mesh jacket for temps over that.

I still need to pick up a pair of armored mesh pants for hot riding conditions as well as a pair of vented gloves.

I think I have the same gloves you have. Those are Joe Rocket Phoenix gloves, I think. They are certainly great for summer/spring riding, but as soon as it gets a bit cool, your hands will get numb (as you indicate in your query is your problem). I looked at your picture again, and I can see they may not be Phoenix. They look a bit thicker. The Phoenix is covered with vent holes and stetchy material covering most of the non-protected parts of the glove.

I also have two other pairs of gloves. One pair is for when it gets a little cooler. That pair is a non-perforated leather glove. It will make most cooler days/evening not too cold for riding (hand-wise). The cold, cold weather glove are Joe Rocket Balistic. These glove keep me warm until I hit the colder side of freezing. This winter when I rode I don't recall a time where my hands got cold enough to have to stop, but I can't say the same for all of my gear. I need to get some more touring/cold weather gear if I'm going to keep up this 365 riding in the north.

For warmer weather, I have a pair of Joe Rocket gloves. Don't remember what model, but they are a combo of leather and mesh w/o insulation. For cold weather, I use a pair of all-leather, thinsulate and Goretex lined snowmobile gloved from Cabella's. They have held up extremely well and hardly even scuffed when I went down 6 weeks ago.

I have rocket gloves, too. A cheap alternative to a new pair is to buy glove liners. You can probably find them anywhere as they aren't made specifically for motorcyclists. They're really thin and stretchy, worn under the biking gloves, and are surprisingly effective at keeping the fingers from going numb. My hands still get a bit cool, but not to the point that it's painful or distracting.

You can also wear latex surgical gloves under the lightweight ones. You have to put them on before you get cold, though, so they keep the heat in.

This sounds like the ideal solution for me. The idea of forking over money at this time of year for warmer riding gloves wasn't making me too happy, but cheap! I like cheap!
