? oil wts.

#1 Unread post by tatas406090 »

i have a 1988 suzuki intruder 750. recommended oil is 10w40. before switching to synthetic 10w40. the bike used to overheat. it runs hot naturally such as after it has plenty of time to get hot and going a short distance, when i stop at light or sit for a minute or two the hot engine light will come on and fan will kick on. but before the synthetic oil it would overheat to the point where the cooland would boil over upon shut off. the synthetic made a noticeable difference. since hearing good things about Royal Purple motor oil (rpmoil.com), i've decided to switch but would like to upgrade to a 15w40 or even a 20w50. the cooler it runs the better! can anyone give me some advice on this? is the 20w50 too heavy and why?
thanks!

It sould not be running that hot with or with out syn. oil.

I would look for another problem besides the oil weight.

I wouldn't go any heavier. Look for cooling issues or switch your coolant to Engine Ice.

Something is wrong with your bike other than oil. Find that and fix that. Curing the symptoms isn't curing the disease. Your bike is sick, don't prolong it's agony.

If you live in a place that doesnt get colder than 0 degrees F, you can do 20w50. In fact, check your owners manual, sometimes they have a range of weights based upon the temperature in your region.

For example, both of my Interceptors are recommended to run on 20w50 unless it is -8F or below! ...So 20w50 it is!

Also, flush your cooling system and get new stuff in there.

Think about replacing the thermostat for good measure. It's only going to cost about $16 bucks if you get one from an autoparts store.
