He was given some nose drops to help dilate the Eustachian tubes. Following this, a burst of high-pressure air was introduced into his nose, forcing pressurised air through the obstructed tubes and into the middle ears, relieving the negative pressure.
that doesn't sound fun at all but might be the source of your "drops to help earblock" info
