1983 gs 550 mods

#1 Unread post by kurty »

I Wanted to pick an unusual bike for modifying and well i seem to have a penchant for picking unusual bikes: my first road bike was an MuZ 660, the second was a Bandit 400, third was this gs550, and now a tl1000s...
1983 gs550es with 7259 miles on the clock had a bad alternator so i stripped her down.
Got Started with the front end, and mounted a 96 gsxr 750 front on it with 6 piston calipers. Back end is in progress right now with a gsxr 1100 swingarm and gsxr 750 5.5 wheel(some machining left to have done-still learning). Anyone else have any mods going on these bikes or am i all alone? Also mounted a hindle stainless full system from a gsxr 600(bolted right up to a 23 year old bike-thanks suzuki!)- r1 seat unit with r1 seat from tromex racing ready to go on and stock suzuki tank- not for long...
hardest part is those damn suzuki double carbs- well i found adaptors to mount 4 carbs and am working on mounting mikuni rs38mm flatslides.
anyone know of where to get a big bore kit? i guess i could send the head to roger upperton and get a 5 angle cut and new cams...
tell me what yall think i think she'll be neat when done.

a little update.....got the swingarm machined to fit the 550 frame(5mm taken off each side), turns out the 550 swingarm bushings fit inside the 750 needle rollers and bushings!! had the front forks mounted but ran into an issue of the stem not being long enough. So i looked up part numbers on bike bandit and the 89 gsxr750k has the same bearings as the 1983 gs550es!!...bought 89 gsxr stem off ebay and will have it pressed in soon.
it seems to be coming along well--thinking of cutting the subframe shorter to mount an undertaill kit- any good questions for one for an 04 R1??
also found a set of fzr carbs instead of the 38mm fcr's- a lot cheaper-probably will work better...engine is out right now till i have at least a rolling chassis...anyone have any suggestions on bigger pistons or cams for this engine????
will post pics tonight or tomorrow-any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

well here is an update: new pics on the front end...http://pictures.aol.com/ap/miniViewLarg ... ause...the gsxr 750 triple clamps back and put the bearings on, slid the stem thru the frame and they slotted right on!! Now i just need a good front wheel...ebay is awesome for this...and the chassis will be rolling...it will be time to slot that *^$#%* heavy gs550es engine in again soon...then hindle headers will be going on and much fiddling will ensue with the carbs

Sweet project! :D With the 1100 swingarm, do you think you'll run into any clearance issue regarding the chain and tire? Or chain alignment issues? If not, sweet! I wanted to do something like this a while ago and kind of went a different route.

By the way, I like your garage. :D
