Looking to switch

#1 Unread post by MadManFuManChu »

Hey all, I've been riding a Honda XR400 for the last few years, but am looking to make the switch from dirt to street. I've tried to search the topics for similar situations but couldnt find any. I was just wondering how smoothly the change takes place. Would I be a little more prepared than your average noob or will I need to relearn some things? Also after running a 400, would a street bike around 750 or 800cc be too much? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

first welcome

second take a MSF course in your area

third the skills of shifting, balance and throttle control should transfer nicely, but on dirt you don't have to worry about drywall on the road, windgusts from semis, cages, dogs, children etc. so there is more to be aware of

fourth, don't use your foot to pivot when you turn, that will hurt

fifth, 750 or 800cc cruiser should be okay...750RR would still be a second or third bike probably

sixth read Dragonhawk's Learn to ride page (i linked it in my sig as Learn to Ride)

not necessarily in that order.

be safe and have fun

Thanks Bok. Appreciate the welcome. I was leaning more toward the cruiser line. I assume the RR means a supersport or crotchrocket (is that an acceptable term here? lol) I am anticipating the road to be riskier for certain. The woods have their own obstacles, but the deer are the only other ones that move.

I think the biggest you should get is a tricycle.

I also suffer from the same dilemma as I am MadManFuManChu's brother. He has convinced me to sell the dirt bike in trade for street. I am excited about the transition. 8)

BTW, I've been riding a Kawi KLX300. I am thinking along the lines of a Kawi Vulcan 750-700 and the like (cruiser).
