License question. Any bikers in Texas?

#1 Unread post by bobtasco »

Hey guys,

Tried google. no success. I was wondering what the law is for liscences in Texas and motorcycles. Just got a Florida licensce and have been driving around for a bit, but now am moving to Texas. Do I have to get a new license right away? Will my endorsement carry over instantly or will I need to retake any tests?

Give this site a try. It appears to be the main DMV site for Texas.... http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/

This seems to be the relevant bit here:
5) The motorcycle classification that I held on my previous state’s driver license was not applied to my Texas Driver License. How can I correct this?

If you chose not to have the motorcycle license applied to your Texas license when you transferred from out-of-state, you will need to pass the motorcycle written, driving* and vision examinations.

If you applied for, but did not receive the motorcycle license, you may contact your previous state and request a letter reflecting the "class" of license you held. Bring the letter into any Texas Driver License office and request that the "class M" be added to the license.

If it has been 2 years or more since you applied for your Texas license, you are required pass the motorcycle written, driving* and vision examinations and pay the required fee. Texas Transportation Code 521.421.

* Applicant must provide motorcycle and following vehicle with licensed driver.

I would just go to the local DPS and have them help you out. Granted Texas DPSs are terribly unorganized and the workers are worthless. I would plan a day trip, haha.
It took me four trips for me to actually get my license (EX: Her "Sir, You filled out the wrong form, come back tomorow" Me "Dammit". But the written test was easy, and the drivers test i passed with out a mark (On my 5th day of driving a motorcyle, no less). Transferring over your license shouldnt be too much trouble though. Good luck.

The main thing when you switch your license over is to stress to them that "YES you do want to keep your MC endorsement". They have a habit of not keeping it when you update your license and then you have to retake the written test.

When I moved to TX, I had to take the written test. I also had to take the driving portion because I let my license lapse. If your license is still valid, you will look at the written portion for the auto and MC endorsement.

I've had the opposite problem in TX. When I moved from FL, they automatically put my CDL on there, even though I didn't want it. The more money they can charge you, they will!

I would just go in and ask. It'll be heavily dependant on the person there. But, as stated previously, be prepared to wait in line...
