What to expect at the MSF?
What to expect at the MSF?
I'm signed up for a MSF class in 3 weeks. What can I expect? Is there a written test? Do they ride on the roads or just in a parking lot? When I signed up, seems like they mentioned a "group ride". I'm taking the MSF in Marysville/Yuba City California.
I've already taken and passed the written test at the DMV and have the permit.
Thanks,
MX

Yes there is a written test. If you've passed the DMV test to get your permit, then it is basically the same test. Riding is only in the parking lots. You do ride with other people on the course so you can say it's a group ride.
Do you already have a bike picked out? Good luck on the course...

Still looking at various bikes (see my other thread a couple down on the list).sharpmagna wrote:Yes there is a written test. Well, congrats to get in saddle for ridding.
Just got my MSF course done few weeks ago.
We use to have Honda Nighthawk 250, which is small bike for me, I am 5'11"- 220#, but test was good.
We did first writen test, then 2 days in poligon for doing various bike excersizes.
Bunch of those excersizes will be on the test.
The most important thing is, they will let you pass the writen test and driving test if you don't fall off of the bike during final. Not a big deal.
I am located in Jamestown, NC.
I use to ride before, but not in past 14 years.
Now got myself Honda Shadow VLX 600, used bike, so I can get in shape again.
Congrats to you and good luck.

I wrote this little essay immediately after I took the MSF a few years ago. It should give you a good idea:

Also are you going to be using your own helmet? If so, you may want to wear it around the house just to get used to the weight of it. When I took the MSF course I had never worn my helmet other than trying it on at the store and a few times at home. Well after riding for about 6 hours the first day on the range, my neck was actually sore. The next day on the range it was still sore and it took a few days for the soreness to dissipate. I guess my neck wasn't used to the extra weight of the helmet.

Yes, I will have my own helmet. I'll try to wear it around the house a bunch. The kids will like that. I'll make heavy Darth Vader breathing sounds.sharpmagna wrote:Also are you going to be using your own helmet? If so, you may want to wear it around the house just to get used to the weight of it.
