the "normal" as i call it, is half the total lenght of the firing range. i don't remember how many yards or feet that is but my instructor told me it's the most common range during a shoot out.
In that case go the .22 LR penetrates and then bounces around in the head.

Though i've been thinking about getting dad one of those full auto paintball guns so he can "shoo" the neighbor kids out of the house. I can understand why he wants them gone. since they only come over and inside when everyone else is not home.

meh, thirty ought six has the best stopping power, fired from a remmington model 700 is my weapon of choice, on and VX, as for range, then id guess it to be 25-50 feet for normal and 50+ for far.

My "expensive" one to shoot is my winchester, which takes 30-30...ugh.. that's like .45 cents per shot.. I need to get a reloading kit.
Im seriously just going to get a 10/22 to plink with. My big guns get too expensive... I do have a 9mm Taurus 24/7 which is nice and cheap to shoot. Good little handgun... the sights just take a bit to get used to.

I am a gun-nut and have a BUNCH of guns. I used to shoot a couple times a month (for about two decades), until I got the motorcycle bug, now the guns are neglected. I have a license to carry concealed and do so regularly.
Your groups are good for a casual shooter assuming they were done at 15yds or so. Most beginners cant keep a 45 on the paper at that range after the first shot. With some practice you and your Kimber could easily shoot 3" groups at 25yds offhand.
Though I have alot of types of handguns, my favorite just to take out to plink steel plates would be any of my 1911's. I use Czeck 45acp ammo (S&B) exclusively, top quality stuff and saves money over the better known brands, and can be bought by the case online here in the free world, don't know about Kalifornia.
Hanging over my beds headboard is a garden variety AK equipped with tritium sights. About 12" from my keyboard is a 1960's soviet bloc Makarov. My most often carried gun is a tiny Keltec. I have six Keltec pistols in different flavors, from 32acp to 5.56Nato (yes pistol!)
i suppose a standard 7.62x54 shell would do the trick.....
Then again im not sure i want to fiddle around with do the trick on a gun that has 1944 stamped on it
7.62x54R is relatively easy to find in bulk online. I always find them about 7 cent per round. I have an M38 and a 91/30. I love those guns!!

I'll have to get some pics of the old dear uploaded. I don't have much faith in the barell integrity.... Just don't trust it enough. and dont really have a place to fire it anymore. i've become a townie
91/30 does look exceedingly nice. I've thought about finding the 90 degree bolt and drill and tap a place for a 4x scope from the side. Never found the gumption to get into it though.
If i could have the collection i Want, i'd have an m14, followed by an ar-15 then the P-90. heh dangit. I'm gonna have to go get the 3 in 1 oil and stink up the house.
30-30 does get a tad expensive to target with doesnt it? good simple proven tech on most of the lever action rifles though.
traffic was bad on a huge part of the 5 freeway south... i lane splitted for about 15 miles. i was so alert and covering the front brake all the time. some cagers actually just turn w/o signals.
also... i went to the skillzday, big thanks to hawkster(he doesn't post much here but he is registered) for hosting another one. i had good training but i wasn't able to finish it since i need to go home to prepare for another appointment (cousin's wedding reception).
it was far... about 72 miles 1 way. going back was hard since i didn't rest after the last exercise i did.
