Stupid license question
I'm in NY.
I have my permit, which is a piece of paper. Apparently I should get be getting a photo permit in the mail.
When it comes time to get my license, however, will I have to get a separate Class M license in addition to my Class D license, or will I get one license that covers both?

You should contact your DMV with these questions. Typically the paper permit is all you'll get - unless someone at the DMV office said that you'll get a photo permit. Did they actually take your photo? Again, this information should be available online with your DMV (like here... http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/license.htm#Motorcycle ) or in some sort of printed information packet that you can pick up at their office.

I'm not at the DMV
It seemed like a simple question. What is Ohio like? Do you have two separate licenses or only one?
They said I would be getting a photo permit in the mail. NY has a centralized picture database that they use for license renewals, state employee IDs, etc.
I'm sure they could answer, but it seems easier to just ask here, yanno?

Not sure about nation-wide, but for Georgia:
...on passing the written test for just a learners permit, (no interstate, nighttime, or passengers), I was issued a card identical to my regular drivers license, even using the exact same photo. It had all the same info on both ID's, except the learners permit stated just that: "Motorcycle LP". The restrictions were stated on the back.
I had to carry BOTH of these until I passed my MSF course. After I passed the MSF course, a sealed envelope was mailed to me with a pass or fail certificate from the MSF.
I handed this UNOPENED envelope, my class C drivers license, and my MC LP license to the DMV, and they issued me a new class C drivers license, with a motorcycle endorsement...even got a new picture, (although it was still a horrible one!)
...hope this helps...

Courage is embracing your fear and seeking its point of origin...but stupid is just plain stupid.

It's not that simple though. What they do here in Ohio is irrelevant to what they may or may not do in New York. You can do the same research that I can.jonnythan wrote:I'm not at the DMV

But since you're so curious about Ohio... first you take a written exam (after studying a motorcycle road-law booklet). If you pass the exam, you receive a paper permit, allowing you to ride with the exceptions... no night riding, no passengers, and you must wear a helmet for the first year. After you practice (or take the MSF course) with the permit, you take a road skill exam (either with the DMV or in the MSF course). If you pass the road skill exam, then you take your "pass" certificate to the DMV office, and they add the "M" endorsement to your regular license. A new photo is taken, and you receive (on the spot) a new license card with the endorsement.
So now you know how it works in Ohio. Does that really help you? I'm not trying to be a jerk - I just thought it would more simple for you to acquire the information from your DMV office, since it's right there online.
Cheers,
Loonette

*I* don't mean to be a jerk, but you came across as one.
You could have simply said "in Ohio, a permit is separate but my license is for both cars and motorcycles, but I don't know about New York" and left all of the other crap out of it from the beginning. I *know* I could call the DMV and sit on hold for 30 minutes, or go to the DMV and spend 45 minutes in line. Their website makes no mention of it. I didn't need someone to tell me that my local DMV would know. Seriously now.
Anyway, to get away from that, thanks to those who responded with helpful comments. Sounds like I will in all likelihood get a replacement license that covers everything.

according to the link that Loonette posted:
- Pass the written test, and receive your Class M or Class MJ permit.
- If you pass the road test, the examiner issues you a temporary motorcycle license. Wait at least 5 days after your road test, and then bring your temporary motorcycle license, motorcycle permit and current photo driver license to a DMV office. Complete form MV-44 and mark the box at the top of the form that indicates "Change." Write "Add Class M (or MJ)" in the other box that indicates, "Other Change." Pay the $10 driver license document fee. The two driver license classes are listed on one driver license document (for example, Class DM). The local DMV office issues a temporary driver license without a photo. You receive your photo driver license by mail in approximately three weeks. The new driver license expires on the same date as your previous driver license.
google is a wonderful thing and can answer many questions. Since this site is international it is many times easier to find local laws/regulations by searching before you ask them here at least if you want a response in a reasonable time.
P.S. i don't think Loonette was being anything but helpful and the link she had posted gave you all the info you needed.

In NY after I got my permit slip, I took the MSF course right away and traded it in for my full liscence. They mailed me a new photo liscence that said CLASS DM, showing I can drive a car and ride a motorcycle. So no, you do not use two sepearate cards.
