I was driving a car on the street legally in grade 8! that's right 14 years old! That was the learner's permit age in Alberta 10 years ago. I had a full drivers license at 16! And actually I was a very good driver... had a few minor speeding tickets, but no real problems...

Although I knew a lot of ppl in school who were getting in accidents, wrecking their parents cars... and one guy who died on a motorcycle driving too fast in the rain after drinking.

So ya, even though I had my license very early, and didn't have a problem... I don't think it is essential for anyone under 18 to have a car or bike. At that age it's just a big toy, and that's dangerous when one has no respect for the vehicle, or the laws... the last thing on most teen's mind is safety for themselves or others. (i.e. 100mph in a 35.)
