So is that two-fingered gesture similar to giving someone the bird in the States?

As far as I know, the 'Bird' = a single middle finger

& the 2 finger means gesture = 'Get Fu_ked'

It comes from British archers taunting the French at Agincourt.

If the French captured an English bowman, they would chop off those two fingers to prevent him ever using a bow again. The English were showing the French that they still had these fingers. (so your meaning is correct :lol: )
