Loss of Oil in Motorcycle

Hey guys.

Today I decided to take a look at the oil window gauge to see if the level was alright and turns out it was completely low. So I then checked to see if I could find evidence of leakage by checking around the oil filter and drain bolt and it was dry. The area where my bike is parked is also dry. I also took a look at the tailpipe for any soot and found none; exhaust gases aren't colored when I fire it up. After all those checks I still could find no evidence of leakage. With that said, is it possible that the engine itself could have somehow burned up some of the oil? I don't believe the engine oil light ever came on and with roughy 2.6 quarts of oil in there I'd guess it wasn't too critical of a situation.

I added roughly one quart of oil to bring the level to the high end of the spec. (3.6 liters is the norm total capacity). I did do the oil change on this bike at 500 miles which is required for initial maintenance. The bike now has 800 miles on it. Is there anything I should be concerned about? I'll simply have to keep an eye on it and if I have to add another whole quart to it only after a few hundred miles then I'll do something about it.

Way too many unanswered questions here. If the bike has only 800 miles on it obviously it isn't broken in by any means. It takes a while for the rings to seat (some bikes take longer then others, some are good right from the start) Was it right full to begin with? I wouldn't worry about it yet however if it doesn't get better then you best talk to the dealer if there is still warrantee on it.

Why haven't you changed your oil?

Yes I changed the oil at 500 miles like I said in the second paragraph. No big deal I'll just keep an eye on it.

If there is something abnormal I will take it to the dealership. However since I do my own maintenance I'm likely to think that I did something wrong somewhere. I'll just monitor it closely.

If the bike is under warranty have the dealership check it out. You can also check the plugs. If their coated with oil somethings up inside the engine. If water cooled you can also check for oil in the coolant. Again indicating somethings up with the engine if oil is present.

The correct way to check the level of motor oil in a bike is to run it first, allow it to warm up, then turn it off, allow it to sit for 2 mins and check the oil level with the bike sitting level. You may not be checking it right and u may be overfilling it.

also...un broken in bikes will USE oil.
