Insurance Question after a Crash

#1 Post by jeff_connors » Tue Jul 04, 2006 12:38 am

My son had a MC/deer meeting the other night. Both lost. My son broke his collar bone, the MC cracked up and one less Bambi in the forest. We have Progressive insurance. If we turn in a claim, will they raise our rates? Anyone with experience with them with this sort of claim? Thanks.

It depends on the laws in your state. When my friend hit a deer her insurance didnt change at all because she wasn't considered at fault. Oddly enough, the insurance agent told her that if she'd swerved and ended up in a ditch to avoid it - her rates would have gone up because she then would have been at fault.

Talk with your agent about it.

Few things: Make sure ur son's name and his correct address is listed on the insurance policy, when you call Progessive make sure you tell them " THE DEER HIT YOU" !!! If you tell them "you hit a deer" they may not cover you, yes ur rates will go up but not much. He's in the hospital, he's going to miss work, I hope he has medical and income loss coverage, if you have full coverage get the bike fixed. Progressive is very good at processing claims they have resident agents living close to you. You used the word "We" when you said u have Progessive Insurance, if the policy is in ur name only and ur son was riding the bike when he wrecked it you may be outta luck. It depends what type of coverage you selected. Call Progessive to find out, they are very professional and they will be honest in answering ur questions.

I've got 3 friends who each hit deers in their cars and none of them had their rates raised here in New York. I think deer encounters is one of those "act of God" weird situations that doesn't effect your insurance. At least that's what I've heard over this way.

RedBull is correct...about new york at least. A deer ran into the side of my dad's truck one night and progressive covered the damage without raising his rates.
