I Get A New Bike & Dealer Warning

#1 Unread post by Sev »

Okay, so I just put a deposit down on a brand new yellow honda 599. Hurray, cannot wait. My price range, the old insurance money carries over, so I pay a difference of about $70, and I should get it within a week. I'm super excited about the possibilty of heading out on that beasty. Dean, Owen everyone from TMW head office, we gotta meet up for a ride soon. Well not to soon, I need a week to get my bike, and a week or two to get used to it. I anticipate some difficult times keeping up with you guys! Life is good. Sort of.
I'm writing this to let everyone know that you probably don't want to buy or try to buy a motorcycle from Scona Cycle in Edmonton. The spent a fair bit of time dicking me around because I wanted a black one, and it was the only black one that was availible. They told me that Blackfoot motors was full of shysters (cheats), they promised me a price that they could not deliver on.
The yellow one cost me 8987, and the black one was 9346. I talked one salesman down to 9100 over the phone, as the extra $120 was worth it for the black. I went into town the next day to talk to him. He didn't show up, the guy I did talk to wouldn't give me the deal. I called him today, and he said that he couldn't give it to me either. I wasted a very long trip just to be lied to and insulted. I was not happy, I hung up the phone and called Honda Extreme, and had them order a yellow one. It's $360 less, and I didn't get jerked around/waste my time there. Which I REALLY appreciated.
Below is a copy of the letter I sent to Scona Cycle to express my dissatisfaction with their service, and practises. If anyone is considering buying from them, I would strongly discourage them. I am not impressed with the way they treated me.

I'm writing this to complain about the level of service that I have recieved at your store. Last Saturday (April 30th) I came into your store interested in purchasing a Honda 599 motorcycle. I was told that it would cost me $9364.64 and I went home to think about it. On Monday I had the opportunity to call around and ask other retailers in the area, both Honda Extreme and Riverside Honda. Where I was quoted $8996.69 and $8986.93 respectively. But they were only able to get my a yellow one. I wanted the black paintjob so I called Ben from your shop and talked to him. I explained the situation, and the amount that I could spend. He left me on hold for a couple of minutes and came back, made the offer of $9150 all in, and I managed to talk him down to $9100. I took the night to think about it, and get together the money. Tuesday at about 5:30 I called again, and we agreed to meet at 4:30 on Wed for me to buy the bike.
I drove 1/2 an hour out to your shop and arrived 15 minutes early, waited around for half an hour during which time I was told that it was unlikely I would get the price I was offered. Ben did not show up. And he made no effort to contact me. I drove AN HOUR home through rushhour traffic across the 17th street construction, with no bike.
Today (April 5th) I called to find out what had happened. I was given the line that "he had bike problems." And was unable to make it. I passed up 5 hours of overtime to make it there to meet him. Aprox $166.25 before taxes.
As I drove home I remember feeling both irritated and insulted, and that is putting it politely.
I was told that the price he offered me was not something he could follow through on. He could not give me the bike at that price. No matter what.
Immediately after hanging up the phone I called Honda Extreme. I'm going to have a yellow 599 within a week, and it's going to cost me $8983.93
Because of your poor customer service and unwillingness to even pretend to honor any deal that you make you've lost a customer. You've also managed to loose the business of all my friends, and potentially a large number of people on the internet motorcycling forums that I visit. "
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Nice one Jeff.To bad about the color but Mike will be so exicted with your color choice.Glad you got a deal sorry you had your time wasted with the other guys.Still this provience is seriously lacking in decent bike sales people. There are only a few shops I would buy a bike from.I think you made an excellent choice there they are great bike.It should keep you amused for a few years to come.So I take it youll be coming on the Alberta Ride Out this year.

Does it look like this?

That's the exact bike, I'm thinking about gettinga windscreen.
When is the Alberta Rideout? I desperately want to go, but my schedule is fixed for the summer.... No way of getting time off work. Hopefully it'll work out to a weekend I have off, even if I have to ditch out early. Or something equally miserable.

Nice work. I really, really, really appreciate good customer service and I hate it just as bad when I don't get it. I tip the roto rooter guy and even my mechanic when they treat me right and I'm a letter writer from way back to call out service that is exceptionally good or bad. If more of us expected good service more of us would get it. I'm not saying to bully every salesman to get your lowest price - they have to make their money too - but once you've been quoted a price by a salesperson they need to honor that even if it means eating a few bucks.

Hornet, what's a Hornet? Hehe, just kidding. I spent hours and hours there reading the posts, and all the encouragement for people to buy one of these bikes before I finally decided on it. I'm really excited about getting it now. Obviously

A quick glance at the calender indicates that either the 4th or the 18th would be ideal for me to ride out. I get off work at 7 am fri 3, or 7pm on fri the 17th. Other then that I have the first weekend of July off. I'm not sure if my schedule will affect any rides at all, but it's out there now if no one has any other conflicts.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

congrats on the new bike Jeff. A shame you couldn't get the color that you really wanted, but at least you got the bike.

Are you available to come out to the Reynolds Alberta Museum on May 14th (yes, 8 days or so away) for the opening of their Motorcycle Exibit?

Dean is coming out, I should be able to make it, and several of the Calgary crew are coming up.

I've got night shifts on Sat/Sun/Mon which means that I'll literally be working from 7 PM friday night to 7 am on monday. 3 - 12 hour shifts. I don't think I'd be able to make it there and back in one piece ;) If you're interested in a copy of my summer work schedule hit me up in a PM.

Congrats Jeff, and nice colour, not matter what Matt says.... :P That was the bike my wife liked the best at the bike show before a certain "Mrs Total Motorcycle" led her away to something else...... I don't think that you could have found a move up bike that will be mcuh better than the 599. Too bad you can't make it on the weekend, BUT as a shiftworker myself, I know about burning the candle at both ends. Just climb outta bed for a couple of hours on sat and hook up with the group! Just kidding, you don't want to risk being half asleep on your new ride.....
There will be other rides coming, not to worry.....
